Looks like the tranny went south on my 02 (49,900 Miles).
Yesterday when I put in reverse, it took a couple of seconds to engage, but I thought nothing of it.
This morning, while on the on ramp at the toll road, while accelerating, the tranny downshifted, then violently upshifted, and no more problems all the way to work.
On my way home, again, while on the on ramp, same issue, so I headed for the dealer.
After a little more driving, it's started to shudder more often and when I got to within a couple of miles from the dealer, the tranny started slipping, and it would not shift past second gear, engine light came on and finally made it, driving slow since my RPMs were around 4500 doing 35 MPH.
Dealer went for a test drive and came back almost immediately and told me that it looks like they will replace the transmission.
By the time I was getting into my loaner TL, they tried to drive my car to the back and it would not engage any gears forward or reverse.
We'll see what they find, but it doesn't look good :(
Has anyone experienced this with their 01 & 02s?
Purchased CPO, so it's still under full one year new car warranty, but it still sucks big time.
On Edit: Forgot to mention that it had the recall done in April 04, and I remember my service advisor telling me that the tranny had been replaced back then.
Thanks,
Paul |

| I think there have been a handfull of tranny replacement here, most of them were done in regards to the recall, some were discovered during daily driving. I havent heard one at least here where it locks up while driving. You should check against you VIN if the recall was done on your 02 prior to purchase. |

Yes, recall was done (I've edited my original post).

Dealer just called me and told me that they have ordered a replacement transmission, so it looks like I'll be "stuck" with the 05 TL for a few days...
Thx

| Sounds like what happened with my 02 TL. I had a light show on my dash the first time, but not the second time, rather violent downshifts, which scared the $hit out of me as I was @ highway speed. |

I own an Acura 2002 MDX with 50k on it. There is a reason why we purchased a Honda Acura, due to them being the most reliable cars on the road. Well, this is what I used to think.
My wife has driven this care like my grandmother and now it is having transmission problems.
Through my local shop, we got an IC code P1740 problem
"Problem in 4th Clutch Pressure Switch Circuit"
I have an appointment with the Acura dealer, to do their diagnostic test, to see if they can fix this problem.
If they are recalling for “overheating” problems and “oil cooler return line” problems, they better do the right thing here and fix the car.
“DUE TO OVERHEATING. IF DISCOLORATION EXISTS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL BE REPLACED IF DISCOLORATION IS NOT PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL PERFORM THE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 21, 2004”
Recall ID Number: 04V176000
This comment here is reassuring: “Consequence: GEAR FAILURE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.”
Has anyone gone through this recall process?
Cheers,
Jp |

I agree, that it is very disappointing that there could be this defect in a Honda vehicle, but it's true. The only good thing is that Honda stands behind their products and will repair, even long after the warranty has expired. |

i hope they hook me up.
i have about 23 years of good experiences with Hondas and Acuras. (i have not owned them for all of this time, because i could not afford them)
in my mind their quality has always gone without question.
i hope their service wins me over to keep me as a long term customer.
my tranny was made in Japan, so this made in north america excuse is not going to fly in my book.
cheers,
JP :3: |

Just picked up the "X".
They've installed a factory reman. tranny, and it's warrantied for 100K miles.
I asked and indeed, they have changed out the tranny once before, but, acording to the advisor, this is a different issue.
Acura has come through as always, I am a happy camper :4:
The TL loaner was nice, but the MDX is way better (the only thing I'm going to miss is the integrated Bluetooth, which I used daily =)
Thx,

..... my brother had his tranny replaced TWICE on his 2002 TL-Type S, first at around 21K miles and second at around 24K miles. He doesn't drive that vehicle anymore (his lease got over in April '04 and he turned it in) |

All fellow mdxers,
My 2002 MDX with 61K on it had transmission problems today. My ride to work is about 24 miles and 20 miles went OK. The last 4 miles, the gear seemed to be stuck in 2nd or 3rd and shifting was not as smooth as it used to be. It seemed to be stuck between 40 - 45 mph and the transmission light came on with D5 blinking. I took it to the dealer in the afternoon.
The tech said the transmission had to be replaced. He said he had to talk to Acura to find out if this is covered by the recall (Apr 2004 - 04V176000 / P31). The recall had specifics to 2nd gear I believe and my diagnosis came to be a problem in 3rd gear. The recall letter did extend the warranty to 100K or 6/7 years right? I noticed another post had a similar problem. Did any of you have to pay for the tranny replacement or Acura did the right thing by covering the full cost?
The funny part is I got the 60K mile service done just a week ago and the service did include transmission service. I am frustrated at the same time thankful that nothing bad happened while driving.
I took the mdx to a different dealer than the one who serviced it ( I did not like the service & attitude in the first dealership). I will post specifics on the dealership once I get through this.
Anxious,

Bummer, the recall did not extend the warranty but since this is a known problem; work with your dealer and Acura Customer care to make sure they goodwill this. Good Luck!!! |

Methinks it is not as clear cut... just becuase the recall discussed '2nd gear overheat" doensn't mean your 3rd gear problem is unrelated... I'd press them on this. Lots of other posts here on tactics, etc. Certainly ask for good will, maybe they'll split costs if not taking the entire cost. Getting the dealership on your side is paramount....

| CMohan, Did you get your MDX fixed ? Which dealership did you go to ? |

All,
An update on my 02 MDX transmission. I had taken the X to Radley Acura, Falls Church, VA and they talked to Acura on who will bear the cost etc. Finally, Acura offered to pay for the parts and wanted me to pay the labor (around 850). After further negotiations with the dealership, the replacement transmission was installed at no cost to me.
The replacement transmission is a remanufactured one - not a new one. It may have had 100K miles or 25K miles - that I will never come to know. The shifting was rough the first few trips but after 2 days it seems better. The dealer said this transmission will have 3 yr/36K mile warranty, but the paper work has the standard 1yr/12K warranty. I have to hash it out with them.
I am still keeping my fingers crossed about the replacement transmission. I am glad Acura did the right thing, but I have seen others with problems in the replacement transmission. The old feeling of "safe and secure" is gone.
Good luck to everyone.
Rgds,
cmohan |

That's odd.
My replacement tranny is covered on the 7 yr/100K mile warranty according to my dealer (could be that I bought mine as a Certified Pre-Owned perhaps?)
Thanks,
