After not being able to figure out why there is no mpg or range display and the instant mpg runs up to max and stays there, the tech ordered a whole new navi unit.

Installed it and the problem is still there, reprogramed it, problem is still there and now suspects the new navi display is defective??

Also, there is no mpg is history.

Anyone else having this problem, we're running out of things to replace.

I see you have an 02 so I'm not sure if the attached thread impacts you: Look at page 2 & 3

Does anyone know how the fuel flow reading is implemented on the MDX? On my last vehicle it actually used a flow meter and was very accurate.

I would expect that the problem is where the computer is getting the flow information. Some older vehicles used vacuum as a source of fuel economy information. Not a very accurate source of information.

Thank you

Good info Hammer, I don't know if I have the option to set background colors and our car is spending another night at the dealer.

Any more thoughts of this head scratcher?

Problem solved :2:

Just got home from the dealer and I have to put this out there in case someone else runs into this on their X 'cause it will drive your tech crazy :(

No mpg, no range and instant mpg pegs out at 50 mpg before you get to 2 nd. gear.

All tests pointed to bad internal failure so tech replaced entire display unit.

sitll not working, retested, tech line says to order Nav drive unit

When the tech went in to replace drive unit, he found the pin connector wasn't attached at drive unit.

Reattached and everything is up and running :D

Hope this never happens to any of you, but if it does, tell your tech to go back to basics.....

Step 1: If appliance does not work, "MAKE SURE IT'S FREAKIN' PLUGGED IN" or you'll work on this car for the next 3 days :3:

"When the tech went in to replace drive unit, he found the pin connector wasn't attached at drive unit."

What is the drive unit? Sounds to me like that dealer has an inexperienced or ????? tech. You always replace the least expensive unit first.

While I agree with your philosophy, the nav drive unit is not a cheap replacement :headshake

During the week the service writer said the drive unit was a $1,400.00 "brain".

Not sure how much the navi display unit costs?

When I got the car back, the passenger seat was all the way forward, is the DVD player the drive unit?

Thankfully all was done under warranty :D

Technically, it's not a DVD player. It is a DVD drive. And yes it's under the passenger seat.

Not always true. I'm sure a linear solenoid would fix some of these transmission problems. But nowadays any kind of transmission complaint that we verify, we just put an entire transmission in. This costs American Honda $2500+ versus only a few hundred for the solenoid.

Time is money. They feel it's more cost effective to just "shotgun" major components than to have a tech waste hours and hours tearing apart a vehicle checking connectors, circuits, and so on.

Granted in this particular case, I would've checked the connections to the Navi ECU (yes that's what it's called...not a "drive") first since they're pretty easy to get at. Months ago though I had some wierd intermittant display problems on a brand new MDX and I put a display in it. I based it on the fact that if I banged on the dash it would glitch, but didn't if I banged right on the ECU or wiggled the connectors. The display didn't fix it. So then I then had to do it the hard way. Three hours later, I found a connector that's buried inside the center console that wasn't completely clicked together from the factory (thanks Canada!). But usually, it's the major components that are the problem. There is rarely a problem with a connector unless it was liek that from the factory, or if there was a collision.
