Anyone have a HD upconvert DVD player? Is there a noticeable upgrade in picture quality over progressive scan?

How do they take a non HD source and upconvert it to HD?

It's digitized, it is NOT an HD signal, only takes advantage of the HDMI input.

Some work better than others. I have an Oppo Digital D71H and it works quite well.

As well if not better than the Sony NS975P I had that broke after 2 weeks.
But the components output of the Oppo sucks compared to the Sony.
But the Oppo was a great deal at $200 including 6 ch analog output for DVD-Audio. This will do me until the real HD DVD players hit the market and settle in price. Overall, a great improvement over my older Pioneer progessive DVD player.

BTW, there is a compatibility issue with specific players and displays. Some combinations work better than others.
Lots of info on this at www.avsforum.com

Anyone have the Zenith DVB318 model that supposedly does well with the component connections (using earlier model firmware), but not as well using the DVI connection to a HD TV.

We have the LG version, I am not impressed. I have yet to see an inexpensive player with upconversion that does it for me. The units are acting as scalers, and not always to the correct resolution. If the player is upconverting (scaling) to 1080i and being fed to a plasma with 720p resolution, the scaling is then occurring twice. You are relying on an inexpensive unit to do high speed complex mathematical algorithms, the processing power is just not available inexpensively. Save your money.

The Oppo among others, like the Panasonic S77 and S97 are a step up, especially if you want to upgrade your older DVD player and not spend a lot of money.
As said, your mileage may differ depending on your particular display.
Is it a 'world' of difference? Absolutely not.
Is in an improvement over some older gen players, in my experience yes.
$200 is hardly a major expense for some improvement. Make sure you can return it if you don't see a difference.
Some are spending upwards of $500-1000 for hi-end Denon and Pioneer players.
To make that 'investment' now, with Hd DVD players on the horizon, would not be wise.
The Zenith 318s were very spotty in performance. I believe the same is true for the Samsungs, most notably the 841.

Most likely I'll buy a PS3 when it comes out sometime next year. To get a next gen gaming maching PLUS a Blu-Ray HD DVD player for around $400 is a pretty good price. Then we'll have to see how many HD DVDs will become available and at how much. I wonder how many people will buy HD DVDs of the movies they like and already have on DVD. If HD DVDs cost more than $30, then it's gonna be tough to get people to spend that much again.

This is OT but.... I just started using Netflix. Is there a way to see what the upcoming movie releases are? I don't see that link anywhere.

I'm a veteran 'flix user. From the time they first started. In fact attended their first focus group. They took a great concept and ran with it.
You can put in any title and it should give you an estimated release date.

How do I see all upcoming releases? For instance I want to see a list of all movies coming out next Tuesday and the following Tuesday. This way I can add them to my queue so I can receive them on Tuesday.

We still have some clientele spending close to $15,000 on Faroudja DVD player / scalers. On the up side, they do an awesome job.....

I hooked up a Zenith DVB318 to my 2002 Model Mitsubishi HDTV today, where it upconverts to a 1080i signal through the component cables (using the downloaded original firmware that allows 1080i thru the component). The 1080i picture looked fantastic vs. my old 480i Sony S7700 DVD Player. The 480p signal via the Zenith component looked about the same as my old Sony 480i hookup. However, the Zenith looked great when using the 1080i component connection. I am glad I was able to get the 1080i through the component since I do not have a DVI with this 2002 model TV
(WS-55908 Mits.). A pretty cheap upgrade for a DVD player to get closer to what a 1080i picture should look like using DVD's.
