well i think i have the dreaded rear brake clunk on my 9000 mile
2005 mdx, it sounds like when i first reverse the vehicl that i ran over a plastic bottle, is this what the sound of the brake click
sounds like? after driving the vehicle the sound disappears,
is this sound just an annoyance rather than a mechanical issue? |

| That is the NOTROIOUS brake clunk noise.....have you heard the gas tank slosh noise ? Why it lovely too ! THANKS ACURA !!!!!!!!!!!! |

Go get a free fix from the dealer, there is a service bulletin just for that Acura "brake Clunk". |

i called dealer and he "explained" to me that it will only
happen when it is cold out and it has just started happening
this week since it has been cold out, i am not too impressed
with acura quality, various rattles. my 2003 bmw x5 which had 80000 miles was the most reliable vehicle i ever had, only back
to dealer for maintenance, |

Welcome aboard! In my experience weather has nothing to do with it, mine has been making this noise since day one. I never had the "shim" fix done since it is not a permanent fix.
It is disappointing, that every single model year has this problem, you would think Acura would have come up with a fix after the 2002 model year.
In the grand scheme of things, there are bigger things to worry about, so enjoy your new ride! |

| After early in the '05 production, all MDXs came with the updated brake shims. There may be nothing that can be done for this particular vehicle other than lubing the shims. |

| You can look through the wheel spokes and see the rear brake pads and caliper. If there's TWO shims on the outer pad, then it's the latest and greatest Honda's offering. If there's only ONE shim, you can go get the shim kit put in. |

| Do you have a drawing or diagram that shows what the hell a shim looks like as I have NO idea when it comes to brakes parts etc.....that is thing I don't mess with.....Change oil, no problem, change brake parts that's what you guys are for...... |

Nevermind. The change happened in '04. All '05s will have the updated rear brakes.
I got confused with another change that was made to correct clunk from the front pads. And that happened in early '05. |

| My 2004 MDx (10850 miles) is now back with the dealer for repair of that "Brake Clunk". I called it a clunking noise every time I step on the brake (forward motion only) after a cold start. Service advisor told me that it is probably a shim brake update and they'll fix it. These SA are sometimes have a lot of BS. |

| ok, got back my 04 X from repair. They replaced the caliper and I believed it was a "brake update" so called. They adjusted the brake swicth and the clicking sound seemed to have died down. They also fix the brake pedal 1/2 inch play sideways but they were not able to replicate the sloshing sound frmt he gas tank. I'm guessing that because I have 1/4 of gas left in the tank. Nevertheless, I'm happy with the result. |

| The clunk is the automatic adjustment of the pads when you go in reverse, the the first time you press the brakes in fowrard they click down to their new position. This is normal and actually a very good design characteristic. |

| Geez... I just got my 2006 and it only has 800 miles and I think I am hearing it already. I sometimes hear it when I turn the steering wheel too much also. Is that the same noise I am hearing??!?!? |

The brake clunk "feature" should only occur when you put your MDX in reverse, then shift into drive and go forward. It should not occur when you turn your steering wheel. |
