I've been reading through all the forums on the search I found.
What I have come to ask is. I thought the mdx was a 4x4 that can only be driven under 18 mph. other then that its just fwd. then as i read through more forum topic. it says its also an awd with distributing torque to all wheels. so which is it? |

The MDX has a proactive AWD system. When you accelerate from a stop it starts in awd and then slowly drops the torque to the rear wheels as you approach 18 mph. At 18 mph, the torque to the rear wheels stops and it is fwd. The VTM-4 will sense slip above 18 mph and go from fwd to awd until slipping stops. You can also lock in the AWD buy putting it in 1st or 2nd gear and hitting the VTM-4 button. AWD will be engaged fully till 18 mph. Acura used to explain this much more clearly in their promotional brochures. |

JL_SS, isnt the 18mph only about the Rear Differential Locking. It will lock/unlock below/above 18mph, that too if you have manually locked it by pressing the VTM-4 lock button.
Otherwise when slippage occurs or when starting off it will redistribute torque irrespective of the speed. |

so if you hammer it off the line you wont just spin the front tires? |

| thanks for all that info. it sure clears it up. when i bought my used mdx a couple of weeks ago. i always thought it was only awd/4x4 when ingaged. now learning this. i'm sure i made the rite choice. |

| one more thing. whats the biggest offset or wheels that a mdx can wear with out rubbing. 22" too big. or should i stay with dubs. |

I have 22x9's and 265/35's and they're just fine. Same diameter as stock and no rubbing at all. |

| Yep, the 18mph limit is just for the VTM lock, when both axles are at 50%. It partially disengages at 6mph and completely disengages at 18mph, and only works in D1, D2 or R. But the AWD aspect (variable torque) of VTM works at any speed. |
