| 91 Octane or Engine Damage?

I was reading through the fuel recommendation for the X and 91 octane is preferred or engine damage will occur. What gives? The compression ratio is 10:1 so I think a lower octane, even 89, would be fine. Has anyone burned less than 91 and had adverse results?
