Who here has Verizon FIOS? I am scheduled to be installed January 5. Download speeds of 15Mbps with 2Mbps upload for $39.95. Some of my neighbors have it and so far it does meet the advertised speed. The upload speed is faster than my current download speed!
Does anyone have the FIOS/TV too? I am very interested in this due to the number of HD channels and they provide local HD over the fiber optic line.
I can't wait! |

| Verizon has a reputation of being very strict on their internet usage. I know of several people who use their EVDO service and had it abruptly cut off because they were using it to download music illegally or file swap. They have a written policy that is specific on what you can use the internet for. Whether this applies to the FIOS I'm not sure. Read the fine print. |

What is EVDO? Also, can you give any specific about the people you know who were cut off. How were they downloading? P2P networks only or other means? Were they flagged for very high bandwidth usage running a server on their IP? How many warnings were they given.
I use Comcast and have not had problems like you describe above but it would be helpful to Verizon users on this board if they knew what usage "profile" could potentially shut down their account. There has to be a threshold reached or formal complaint to have an ISP shut you down. They want your money and rarely bow to 3rd parties looking to finger their customers for illegal activities.
Thanks. |

I got mine about 6 weeks ago and dumped my T-Mobile account that I had for Hot Spots. I have been in Seattle and Vegas recently and it was great to not have to pay those hotel rip off charges for high speed access. I was even on jury duty a few weeks ago and was able to check email and surf the web while I was waiting to be interviewed. Here's another thread: http://acuramdx.org/forums/showthre...ht=road+warrior
I ended up with the V620 Card. |

I currently have Sprint EVDO Service. It works great! Recently tried it on a trip to Honolulu, Hawaii and I had great connections. I think Verizon lags Sprint in terms of coverage currently. That might change.
As for Verizon people getting their service cut off - if you read evdoforums.com you will see a forum topic concerning this. People report suddenly (NO WARNING) having their Verizon EVDO service cut because they were using it to download music , file sharing. I believe you CANNOT use your EVDO connection to webcam accoridng to Verizon. Again it is in the forums. |

I have been fortunate enough to have worked with both technologies and just wanted to point out that this started out as a FIOS topic, which is a broadband fiber optic rollout by Verizon and then 1xevdo, which is a broadband "wireless" access solution that Verizon and Sprint is rolling out.
I guess whether they shut off service is more of a usage policy rather than tied to the technology itself.
Glad to hear folks using EVDO like it. Any drawbacks that you may have experienced? |

The FIOS is up and running. Initial download speed tests were around 15.1 meg. Wow! I did a google search for speed tests and found about a million of them. I selected several different ones to get a much more varied sample. The slowest was 8.8 meg. Still much faster than my previous DSL. Sticking to the more common speed test sites I was staying in the 14-15 meg speed. Upload was a very consistent 1.8 meg.
I'm happy. :D Now I will probably drop Directv and switch to FIOS TV in April when they have new equipment ready. |
