My '03 with 60k is making a little extra noise when it starts the concerns me. It is largely a mom-mobile and gets lots of starts.

Anyway, what happens is at least the first time you start it cold, once it fires up it seems like the starter stays engaged a bit too long and kind of buzzes until it disengages.

Basically it sounds like the started is not disengaging as fast as it should. Anyone else heard of this?

thanks

I have a similar sound that just developed a month ago.
Everytime I start the car cold, it makes a weird noise like you described. It last for only 2 seconds and the car runs fine.
I have no clue whats causing the noise but it cant be good.
I have the car at the dealer so hopefully they can find the problem.

Did you ever find the source of the noise?

Same problem here - 2003 MDX with 54,000 miles. I haven't taken it to the dealer yet, so no resolution.

Just got the call back from the Acura service dept.
Its the starter making that noise on the cold startup and they are replacing it under warrenty.

I find this on a BMW forum.
This is the best explaination I found so far.

This noise comes from the start motor as it hangs on the flywheel. When it is cold, the lubrication on the Bendex becomes so stif that it does take some time for the start motor to shift from operation position to get back to normal rest position. As the motor starts, it revs more than run by the start motor only and this couse some vibration in the electric motor. So no worry, it will do no harn.

Just keep the revs as low (up) as possible. The higher the revs the more difficult it is for the start motor to get back. So do nothing or if you want the noise away: open, clean and apply new lubrication for Bendex.

thanks for the feedback gang. That explanation sounds plausible. I am at my bro-in-laws and he has a lift so we will poke around on it. Just put on a hitch. Much easier with the right tools and up on a lift....;)

Took it to the dealer to have the noise checked and for the 60,000 mile service ($380!). They replaced the starter at no charge in spite of the fact that the vehicle was out of warranty. They mentioned "goodwill" and the fact that I had regularly had the vehicle serviced there.

So, the routine service charges are steep, but worth it from where I sit. Still, it is disappointing that the starter gave up the ghost.
