anyone use a Foam Mattress? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Been waking up lately with a sore and stiff back. My normal springbox mattress is only 3 1/2 years old so it can't be that the mattress is wearing down. My friend swears by the Tempurpedic mattress... but I'm not sure I want to spend $1500 for their bottom of the line king size mattress. I was doing some research, and it seems there are tons of cheaper alternatives, but are they really as good? Is Tempurpedic the equivalent of Bose? Tons of marketing to hype up their product so they can charge a premium?

Anyone have any real experience with Tempurpedic or other foam mattresses?

I prefer a firm bed to a soft bed, so I was wondering if I would even like the foam mattress since it seems you "sink" into it initially. I also hear that the foam retains some of your body heat... this might be nice in the winter, but could make you hot in the summertime.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

I have been using Tempurpedic for 4 years and had no complain at all. We bought it from a local reseller which is a lot cheaper than Brookstone. I don't remember the name of the store but it is near Temple City. I never tried other foam mattress so I cannot tell how it compare to other brands though.

Check this out!

Novaform® Elite Memory Foam Mattress Topper available at Costco. Best $138 I ever spent. The thing weighs a ton and is a real pain to peel open. Moving it usually requires two people because of the density and it's size. But the payoff is more than worth it.

My daughters going through a tough time right now as the in-laws are visiting and they are sleeping on her pad. She was just telling me last night how much she loves that thing and didn't realize it until it was gone. She's having trouble sleeping with out it.

It's also a small price to pay so if it doesn't work for you you're not out big bucks. But I'll bet you'll get the relief you're looking for. Costco is also really good about returns so it might not cost you a cent if you don't like it.

Good luck!

We have slept on the same foam mattress for the past 42 years. Even now and then we think of changing for something new. Every time we go out and try a display mattress we decide we like the one we have. The one we have is medium firm.

I do not think I would like the one I see advertised that seems to "wrap" around your body.

I bought a "memory foam" mattress a few years ago and it's wonderful. Tempurpedic is one of those brands where you'll pay extra for the name, but the foam is the same. Try some other brands too.

If andreseng thinks the mattress topper weighs a ton, by comparison, the full mattress weighs several tons. And I always thought foam was lightweight!

Cool, I just ordered the topper!

Is there some kind of support mechanism? Or does it just flop about? I would assume there is something holding it together, no?

hammermdx-

Enjoy it. And be sure to follow up in this thread with your experience. Have fun (tons of patience) peeling it open! It'll be worth it.....

What has to be peeled open?

We've got two memory foam toppers - in our home. Save the money and just invest in the topper, around ($75 online or at JCPenny). Well worth it and you don't have to shell out the big $ for the entire mattress.

I used to wake up to tingling in my arms but now, no more. Also, spend the $ on the Tempurpedic pillows. Mrs. LL swears by it.

They fold, compress, and vacuum seal it so it will fit in the box. When you open it, the foam is so compressed and vacuum sealed that you literally have to peel it apart to open it up once you remove it from th bag inside the box. Then it needs to sit open for a bit before it regains its true dimensions. But again, it is well worth that initial hassle.

My only thought on JCP vs. Costco is the return policy. Costco is much more liberal. I'll bet JCP might not be as accomadating if you didn't like it and tried to return it.

Good point. I don't return much but I know they had a sale there this week, like 40% off or so.

The most important point is the thickness of the topper. Minimum is 2"

hammermdx
The one at Costco is 2.5" thick.
laborlitigator
The one I bought at JCP was 2" only for $75.
hammermdx
Looks like the one JCP is offering now is only 1.5" thick: http://www3.jcpenney.com/jcp/Produc...&S4DeptID=25436

I also have the one from Costco and you sure do have to peel it apart. Mine had a pretty strong smell and I let it sit for several days before I put it on the bed. It also comes with a cloth cover. At least for me it doesn’t slide around on top of my mattress. I have had it for a few months and I flip it once a month. Mine is a queen and isn’t too difficult to handle.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll definitely try out the mattress topper. Better to spend around $140 than $1,000 or so.

I'll post more later to let you guys know if it helped my back.

The mattress is 10' thick. When you've got 10 inches in bed, it doesn't flop about.

<insert your own joke here>

But seriously, folks... I can only assume that the 10 inch thick mattress weighs five times more than the 2 inch thick mattress topper? It's like an anchor, and doesn't slide off the foundation underneath like a regular mattress does if you lean against it. I've flipped it over just once in the three years I've had it. Definitely a two-person job, even if you're a big guy.

The covering is kind of like a quilted cotton, not dissimilar to a regular innerspring mattress has, but it's softer and not shiny.

This is absolutely nothing like those cheap "egg crate" foam mattress pads (which I also have on top of a regular mattress in another bedroom).

Reminds me of that old Aerosmith tune.....

got me the strangest woman
believe me this trick's no cinch
but I really get her going
when I whip out my big 10 inch

record of a band that plays the blues
well a band that plays its blues
she just love my big 10 inch
record of her favorite blues
Blackura
Yeah, I know it well. Played that one a few jillion times back when I was a rock radio DJ... heavy phone requests, ya know. An old blues tune, by the way. Aerosmith just dusted it off and did it some 70's rock justice... one of their best.

So then you must be Pete Fornatale from WNEW-FM :4:
Blackura
Sorry, but no. Nice try. He's quite talented and knowlegable about music. I love his weekend "Mixed Bag" show on WFUV 90.7 FM these days. It's as close as you'll get to the old NEW-FM these days.

It appears we've hijacked the mattress thread.

Did a little research and looks like the Novaform is getting mixed reviews.

I guess I'll keep looking around. I'm gonna try and find a memory foam topper that's 3 inches thick with 5lb density foam per cubic foot because I like a firmer bed.

Update:
Here is one I found that has the specs I want and got a great review... the review has some good info on foam mattress toppers.

http://www.epinions.com/content_185842175620

Now I have to see if I can buy this in a store, or if I can only order online.

Did you do any research other than Epinions?

Remember, you are looking at the opinion of 10 people only in one case and one in the other. You also know that you usually only hear from people that have problems not unlike this forum! :2: The one you're saying is better has only 1 review.

I stand by my initial post. If you buy it at Costco you can always take it back if you're not happy. It's still the best $138 I ever spent!!! Now back to sleep.....:o

Ours arrived a few days ago and you guys were not kidding about peeling it apart! I let it "air" out and return to it's full shape and size for a few days before I put it on our bed. The Cover that comes with it is great too. So far so good, we have slept on it for a few nights, and my back feels better already!!! Now my kids want them for their beds.....too bad Tim can't do a group buy on this! Any idea on the lifespan of these things?

No. But I can tell you I've had mine for 2 years now and it looks as good and feels as good as the day I set it free! :jump3:

Hi, I bought a memory foam bed from QVC 2 years ago and love it. It is called Bodipedic. It is very similar to a Temperpdic bed, but much cheaper. I think the foam is 5 inches thick. This was about $900 for a queeen. They are highernow but have more foam. I have back & shouder/arm problems and this is the only bed I can sleep on.

We have a Select Comfort, now called a Sleep by Number.
And are very happy with it. Had the new memory foams been readily available at the time, I would certainly have tried them out.
The SC is nothing like an air mattress. In fact, even at the lowest setting is still a bit on the firm side, and there is no rolling or bounciness as you might expect.
It is virtually indestructible, and just by it's nature, will always compensate for any wear.. although I am not even sure where the 'wear' would be.
Most comfortable conventional mattress I ever tried, was a Stearns & Foster.
Most comfortable mattress of any kind was the Duxiana. Incredible mattress. Not cheap.
Like chairs, car seats, etc. specific mattresses work best for specific people.
Other than our general appearance, I don't think there is anything much more individually unique among humans than their backs from a comfort aspect.

I bought this about 4 months ago and it has worked exactly as advertised! It probably took about 1 week to get used to sleeping on it. But ever since then, I haven't had a single problem with my back upon waking up! Thanks again for the recommendation. I also bought 2 memory foam pillows from Costco for like $20-25 each... can't remember the brand off the top of my head. Those also work great.

I have used a foam mattress for the past 42 years. (The same one by the way.) I too prefer a "firm" mattress. I do not sink into the one that we have. I am sure that there are more modern mattresses that are more firm and even more comfortable. Every now and them we go out and look for new beds and always just quit and say we are comfortable with what we have.

My wife has a piece of plywood added on her side to promote more stiffness for her back. I have some back problems also but do not find that I need the board.

With the mattress that we have I do not find that I sink into the mattress very much.

So, are the Costco "cheapies" holding up ? :)

The place we stayed in Phoenix last month had the Tempurpedic bed and Mrs. Nightguy just loved it. I like it too but not enough to replace the traditional mattress we have for the $$.

I'm still very pleased with mine. :D

Ditto with mine too.

Just wondering if anybody has the Duxiana (Dux bed)? Dale mentioned it a few posts ago. They cost something like $7,000 and I'm wondering if they're worth it.

I know I wouldn't sleep very well thinking about the 7 grand I just paid for a mattress.
alphaforcex
I also bought one and honestly, it takes a while to get used to. But once you get used to it, there is no turning back. It's the best $100 we spent last time!
nightguy
Dumb question, but the actual product from Costco is just the top half, right ? Otherwise I can't imagine how the sheets will fit.
andreseng
That must be a pillow top mattress. Yes, the top piece is the foam.
