gritting sound when turn with acceleration - Click HERE for Original Thread

when outside temperature drops down at -20C (should be your -4F?) or below in my area i feel the gnash is going from somewhere under if i make a quick turn with acceleration (for example from adjacent to main street). it sounds like a kinda cold-rubber or metallic grinding noise and lasts a second or two maximum but sure troublesome. can anyone figure out what this can be? vtm-4 and atf-z1 have been recently flushed and changed much before the sked, so all fluids are fresh.
the point is that i have imported that car from canada and it is so called 'grey' import as officially we have only honda dealers in russia and no acura as acura is not imported into russia by official channels but only personally by enthusiasts and devotees.
i'm living in 1 mio city and there are just 3 or 4 mdx here so far, so this forum can be the only source.
the odometer shows 64K kms. vehicle is of 2002 year make.

also i wanna know if someone was changing the filter in the tranny. as far as i know there are 2 of them there and the one is inside of tranny's tank and can be changed after removal of the wholel AT, which is too costly and labour-intensive, BUT the second is an outside filter and is being changed almost like the normal engine oil filter. your comments please.

where can i check if my tranny has been replaced or modified by acura dealer under the service bulletin?

Can't really help with any of your questions (living in Southern California don't know much about driving conditions at -20C) but did want to welcome you to the site.

I'm sure you will get much useful information from some of the other board members soon. Just try to avoid getting into any "political" discussions as the MODERATOR will quickly close the thread.

The noise that comes with an accelerating turn could be from the front constant velocity joints. When it gets cold, the lubricating grease will not flow as easily. If the joints need lubrication, they will wear quickly.

The running gear in the MDX is mostly identical with the Honda Pilot. The local Honda dealer might be familiar with the Pilot. He also might be able to run the VIN number through the computer and see what servicing and recalls have been completed.

Good luck with your car, and please keep us posted.

I'm sure we would all get a kick out of any pictures you could post.

many thanx for your replies. the only explanation, or better to say - suggestion, that i could get here was that the noise might come from cardan suspended bearing but i still had no time to check it. so will check both options later.

you guys fight with your dealers even in the country of mdx 'origin' as i see from this forum. can you imagine what i have to go thru' here? :4: :4: :4: anyway, will try to pull the strings soon after new year:) let 'em sweat a bit...

i'm attaching a cell picture of my mdx here in siberia. there are 2 more in the town, 1 is the same black coloured and the 2nd is silver. so total 3, at least what i know.

now promise not to laught... can you explain to me what exactly 'fell 4 a troll' means? appreciate it.

p.s. i hate politicians and ours first of all.

mdxkja...

What kind of tires are those?
Do you garage your car, or does it set outside nights?

Hi, been out for long public holidays here (starting 01 and thru' 09 Jan).

It sets outside nights. The tires are Bridgestone DMZ-3. The MOST excellent and perfect for winter, I swear. A set of 4 costed me $900 here. I believe it is much cheaper in US ... but I live in Russia.
The OEM Michelin 's.cks', they are the way out for snow and ice which is crucial here as the winter season starts in November and the rain+snow in April is no surprise. So, Michelins are well stored in garage for good. Don't know if I ever reboot 'em again
I have a brand new set of Hercules TerraTrac for summer that I've ordered and imported with truck. They look more ragged than normal summer tires. Never tried that brand ... can you say something of them, good or bad?

look, guys, i've check everything up and down and so far i came to the decision that the noise originates from one of supplementary driving assistance systems like VSA or something. what do you think?
when i come out of warm garage even when it is -30c outside nothing is there, i mean no noise at all. it appears only when the car sets outside night or thru' the day at my office outside parking.
Mr. Mom
I bet that’s what it is as this has happened to me as well. Only has happened a couple of times on my gravel access road. Not at your temperatures though.

more input on this would be nice. i have the same problem on my 02 mdx.

Old thread, but I had a similar problem here in NC (no below zero temps!) and after a VTM drain and fill no more groaning/grinding upon acceleration and turning.
