I had been driving my 2002 MDX (which has about 50,000 miles) for several hours from sea level up to about 6000 feet and everything seemed to be operating normally. I stopped for gas and shortly after getting back on the freeway the check engine light came on and the D5 indicator started flashing. The car appeared to be driving normally, but I pulled over to check the manual. I found that I could not put the car in park (it did not go past neutral). It was snowing hard so I did not want to shut off the engine, for fear I would be stranded in a dangerous location. I continued about 25 miles to my destination. Along the way the speedometer acted erratically, sometimes showing the actual speed and sometimes showing zero. When I arrived at my destination, I turned off the car and was then able to shift into park. I restarted the car and the check engine light was still on but the D5 was not flashing anymore. I drove around the block and the speedometer stayed at zero and the odometer did not move at all. Tachometer appears to function normally.

The closest dealer is over 100 miles away. I spoke with the dealer nearest my home and the service advisor tells me he thinks it is a speed sensor and that driving it back home is unlikely to cause any further problems (although it could be dangerous to drive without knowing the speed). Any thoughts? Should I get it checked by a local mechnanic or just drive it home?

BTW, the transmission was replaced under warranty earlier this year.

If you are concerned about driving without a speedometer, then just watch your tach. Keep the RPMs in the range they would be normally on the highway.

If the dealer said that the car should be OK, you can look at the bright side. You could drive another 50K and the car is still showing 50K. :D

The D5 light flashing is an indication of transmission problems.

On my 2004 MDX, they replaced the neutral safety switch and it fixed the problem fine. Prior to that, I had instancess of RPM reving and a whirring noise.

Sounds like a transmission failure brewing-If you ignore the warning lights on the dash, and continue to drive you risk:

a. Killing yourself, your passerners or an innocent motorist

b. Voiding Acura warranty coverage.

They can determine when the code was set, and how long the car was driven afterwards.

Good luck

I was wondering if a fellow 02'er could verify something for me. When you put the key in the ignition and turn it to acc does the D5 and P lights light up? I noticed it today. MDX is running fine but was curious.

02 here, Cluster doesn't even light up in ACC for me.
