We just sold a 2003 XC-90 AWD T6 and bought the 06 MDX with Tour/Nav.
Anyone else do the comparison?

We initially planned to by an XC90(had a 740 and still have a 960) but after reading the Volvo forum and this forum for a year decided that the MDX was a better choice.
Best of all I dumped the 99 Grand Cherokee! |

When we bought our 2003 MDX, it came down to the XC90 and the MDX. The MDX was cheaper, offered more space, and had the Acura/Honda reliability history. The XC90, on the other hand, was a first model year for Volvo and Volvo does not have the best reliability record even though it has a great safety record.
In the end we had problems with the MDX but they were not typical. I don't think our experience with the XC90 would have been much better given the big black dot it carries in the CR reliability reports. |

JL SS,
Fully concur...we had 7 Volvos and were incredibly disappointed with XC 90 AFTER it passed the 50K marker and then wrestled with the "extended exclusive " warranty.
Too bad, the V's were outstanding and we drove them to 100K+ each...
What a shame....

| My in-laws have both a t6 xc90 and a t5 xc90, both decked out. I really like them... However, I think the MDX is a much sexier ride.... I might just take one from them when the MDX is too old since both volvos are brand new. :) |

I got an invitation to test drive the XC-90 before they were available in the US. At the time I seriously considered the XC-90 but decided to wait - never buy the first year of a new model. Its nice but cost goes up - way up with options to match the MDX. Poor gas mileage and power loss at higher elevations were also minuses.
This was about the time I found acuramdx.org - info from you all convinced me to get a MDX! |

I drove several Volvos before buying my '05 MDX: XC70 and XC90. I spoke with many people who owned Volvos and they all said the same thing: they are great as long as you have a warranty. They are very expensive to fix and the reliability is questionable. They are very nice vehicles, but they would have end up costing more in the long run than the MDX.

I owned a V70 before the MDX and my experience was exactly that.
Even so I really wanted to buy a XC90, overall it seems like better vehicle.
However the over-boosted steering which rendered the vehicle undriveable in my opinion (and the prospect of expensive repairs) sent me searching elsewhere. |

| how about the mdx verse the X5? |

| I bought my '05 from a small, independent dealer who had a couple of X5s on his lot. I asked him to compare them to the MDX. He said that the X5 felt more connected with the road but that, again, repairs are very expensive and they can be sort of temperamental. He said that having a predominately rear-wheel drive (with AWD capability) car made it a slightly better road vehicle but for the price, he'd take the MDX over the X5. Just his 2 cents. |

The Saab 9-7x is a tweaked and rebadged Chevy Trailblazer, which does not have the best reliability record........ |

I thought the Saab is a rebadged Subaru. |

| I compared the 2 very closely. While I like the fact that the XC had xenon options, I went w/ the MDX in the end because of the nav system. I didn't like Volvo's pop-up nav and I didn't want an aftermarket nav. |

These are fairly similar vehicles as SUVs go. The XC90 has a European flavor to it, but when I drove one thinking it might be a BMW X5 with a third row I concluded that it was instead a Swedish MDX. My full review of the Volvo, which makes a number of comparisons with the MDX: http://www.epinions.com/content_103717113476.
My site (www.truedelta.com) provides a handy way to thoroughly compare the prices of most vehicles. |

to sum up my opinion of the XC90 in one word... YUCK!
We went to the local car show this past weekend and the new XC90 looked like a Ford to me. We looked at all of the manufacturers SUV's as we will soon be back in the market and quite frankly the MDX and Lexus are tops on our list. |

... at least they got rid of the Ford's V6 engine and replace it w/ the Yamaha V8 :D
Has anyone test-driven the V8 version? I test-drove the V6 and the T5 and decided my 01 MDX was much better. |

| Also just purchased my MDX... after much shopping to include the XC90... both quality SUVs but the MDX had additional space and additional HP. I have never felt so at home as in this MDX...love it. |

We shopped new and used for about 3 months before finally deciding on the MDX (2006 w/Nav+Tour+DVD in Black with saddle interior). Why the MDX?
Spacious without being huge.
V6 rather then a V8. This is a grocery store/babycart/occasional ski trip. We are under no illusions that we are stomring pikes peak with it.
Acura reliability. This replaces a 1997 2.2 CL with 145k miles on it that still runs like a bat out of hell and has only needed a new starter outside of normal maintenance for its entire life!
Price, holds its value well, fantastic value for the money.
Drive/handling/power/options. Its the first car my wife said 'This is actually intuitive, they thought about moms when they built it.'
Still 'sporty' and 'sexy' in my wifes words.
Sorry guys, not to take away from anyones 'G Ride' but my wife thinks this thing is the ULTIMATE soccer mom mobile.
Anyhow, now I get my A4 Avant back and she has her new and spacious SUV. We looked at just about every SUV on the market in every class and really felt that this was the perfect mix of size, cost and function that our lives required.
Thanks Acura! |

I traded my 2003 Expedition for this 2006 Acura, and yes- I am a bit homesick... OK, I'm REALLY homesick..
The MDX is a much more refined, smoother, and somewhat tighter vehicle in it's design and execution; and although it's swifter and more nimble; it doesn't feel as powerful, nor does it seem to move as effortlessly as my Expeditions did (2000 & 2003).
2000

2003

Don't get me wrong, I love my MDX; it makes up in luxury and refinement what it gives up in space, ride height and overall comfort... But, it's still a sweet ride overall> It's just not going to turn heads like my 2003 Expy on "dubs".
I thought I'd be driving the "X" more, and parking the F-150. But, I think I'll be in the 150 more, and probably rolling the "MDX/Flagship" on weekends, and highway trips... |
