Towing with the MDX - Click HERE for Original Thread

I was wanting to know who has had experience towing with the MDX and how well it handles in snow. I have a snowmobile trailer that is roughly 1200-1500lbs when loaded. I used to pull with a Jeep with a V8. How well does the MDX pull a trailer?

Looking for some experienced feedback.

I have pulled a 5x8ft UHaul that was moderately loaded. It handled that with no preceptable problems. I did use 4th gear frequently in hilly country. I had the complete package of transmission and Power Steering coolers installed.

Have no experience with pulling in the snow. No chance of ever having that experience!!!

I pull a 3500 lb SeaDoo boat in the summer, and the X has no trouble doing it.
I have a 2 place sled trailer and pulled it up to the cabin last Fall (no snow). It pulls fine, not as aerodynamic as the boat so you tend to know they're back there.
I pulled one sled into the shop last weekend after receiving 6" of snow and it pulled like a dream. The added weight to the rear made a nice difference in the deep snow.
Now hopefully the shop bill won't be too much so I can still buy accessories for the X.

Towed a 5000 lb trailer with my 03 MDX with towing package with no hassle for 800 miles. It worked like a charm. 260 horses on a V6 is more than ample, dont need a V8 besides Honda Acura knows how to tune their V6 for ultra performance.

You do realize do you not that 5,000 lbs. is over the recommended trailer weight? Could cause warranty problems.

Once again the warranty bogeyman appears!

Just keep in mind that recommendations have a built in safety factor of at least 50%.

For example change your oil every 7,500 miles in normal - actually the safety margin is 10,000 miles.

This has to be because not every owner is conscientious.

Think of it this way: Airplanes, buses, trains all have built in safety margins. So does your MDX!

I have pulled the following:

5X8 open Uhaul trailer
5X10 closed Uhaul trailer
23 foot sailboat, about 2500 lbs.
20 power boat, about 3,000 lbs.

No trouble at all - except gas mileage dropped from 22 to 16 or 40% less!

Finally, I do not have either the transmission or oil cooler and my hitch is from Uhaul.

No, I have never had any problems with either overheating or transmission. But of course when pulling the above, I kept my speed down and avoiding quick starts and stops (but then again pulling a trailer negates quick starts!)

You may not have warranty problems, but if there were to be an accident of any kind, I really doubt your insurance company would stand behind you.

Dear R-MDX

Sorry, but I do not think there is any basis for your post.

If you go through a red light, speed, etc. which are moving violations of the law, your insurance company is responsible.

As far as I know, towing a trailer of 5,000 lbs. is not against the law.

Before you post, and get others unnecessarily worried, check your your sources.

Hey Mr. G,

Thanks for the reminder, i'll try not to tow that much again.
But case in point, no issues with towing "heavy" with an X.
cheers - Rick

Thanks for the feedback. I am impressed that the MDX was able to tow a 5000lb trailer. This means it will easily work for my needs.

By the way, no dealer is going to know if a car is under warranty if you towed to much, this is just your risk if you hold on to your cars past the warranty period.

One more question? What does the towing package option normally cost to add to existing MDX's?

UNLESS, of course, you post in the world's largest MDX forum that you tow way over the manufacturers limits.

From hondaacuraworld.com (the best accessorties site):
Two Coolers- $310
OEM Hitch $650

Installation- about two hours (Rated higher in the pricing schedule)

If you get OEM for $1,100 after the purchase is closed, you did well.
