This is the second time that I complained the noise to my dealer. They confirmed my MDX's two back tires are badly cupped which cause the "pa...pa...pa.." loud noise while driving. (like driving a 10+ year old pickup, haha.)
They said the inner sides of both rear tires are badly cupped.
Did a quick search and found out some possible causes -
- Unbalanced tire condition
- Faulty wheel bearings
- Loose parts
- Fatigued springs or weak shock absorbers.
- Loose wheel bearings
- Miscounted tire/ wheel assembly
- Out of balance wheel assembly
- tread design/ tire design
- worn bearings, shocks, springs or other suspension components
- mismatched duals
- Inconsistent dual inflation (10 PSI or greater)
I take good care of my MDX and rotate & balance tires every 6k to 8k miles. It's a 2004 base and now just turns 19,000 miles.
Just wonder if anyone experiences the same before? What causes both two rear tires wear in the inner side like that in such low mileage? And what your dealer did for you?
This is my second MDX from this dealer and I?m a very satisfied customer so far. Just schedule to bring it in again next week... and to see if they will do anything this time.
Thanks. |

What you are describing is usually an algnment problem.

then what did the dealer say or do ?
Take it to a shop where they do full alignment and have it checked out. If alignment comes out fine then approach the dealer again for the other stuff. |

I also have an '04 base and I think it may just be our tires. I think only one of mine is cupped, but it's still annoying. Of course, mine started around 40k, so I wasn't overly upset, but then my dealer said that an alignment would possibly FIX it.....yeah right!! I have a friend who works in Bridestone's field service dept and said that's a load of crap.
Anyway, I'm just looking forward to getting new tires. Although, the dealer also said my tires have more than half of their life left on them....maybe another attempt to get me to let them perform an alignment. I just think the tires are hard formulation, and therefore more prone to cupping.
But PLEASE let us know if any of the other items on your list prove to be an issue as well. I may want to have them checked out. |

Kev, I think that you need to find a friend who is more knowledgable.

Dude, just 19K miles, and cupped tires? That sucks.
Bad struts are the cause. I would bet $50 on it. Is the cupping even as you look at the thread left to right? If so, the allignment is fine.
My 2004 has 22K and counting, and my tires are wearing evenly. |

| Pauls MDX |
I also never had a problem with tires wearing uneven, especially with the Costco deal the balance and rotate every 7500 miles for free included in the original price!!!

Very good possibility. I had forgot about suspension.

I looked at my tire and couldn't see anything. So is cupping always visible? In any case, should I have the dealer investigate the front strut? Is the strut just "sagging?" |

If your back tires are "badly cupped" it will be both visible and you can feel it when you run your hand over the tire.
Have you taken your vehicle to an independent shop? You need to do that before any more discussion so that you have a good data point.

Early this week, I wrote down possible causes that I listed and asked dealer to check. (Provided my rotate & balance records) They got back and said nothing wrong with the vehicle, it’s the tires. The Goodyear integrity is easy to wear and I should change them to CTs. IT'S NORMAL!
I then asked "less than 18k?" why I didn't have this problem in my 2002 before I traded in for this 2004? How many mdx owners you know have their GY tires cupped like this within this mileage considered normal? They still replied - it's the tires, nothing they can do.
Got a chance to bring it to a tire/suspension shop yesterday. They said the rear right shock/suspension has problem which caused the problem. The rear right wears a bit more than rear left. They wrote down the problem on their business card and suggested to bring it back to dealer to fix it under warranty.
Just called the dealer again and now they want to take another look. I will bring it in next week.
I’ve been very polite on this issue with the dealer, and about to lose my patience.
IF they still blame on tires and insist “it’s normal”, what can I do? Any suggestions? |

It would have been better if they gave you a "report" rather than write it on the back of their business card.
But if you still feel something's not right then WRITE to the area/regional Acura manager - NOT CALL but WRITE . |

I have just had a new set of Michelin MDX tires replaced under tire warranty. They gave me, after <5k Miles a pro-rated discount and I had to pay a local tire dealer to mount, balance etc.
The first set were badly cupped.
Now, less than 2 weeks later they are maing the cupping sound again in the new tires.
The car is perfectly aligned to factory specification and the tires were just mounted, balanced 2 weeks back by the cert. Michelin dealer.
I can't get a handle on what is causing the cupping but I'm glad to know that its not just the tires.
These are Michelin, MXV 4 Plus tires and were recommended by the Michelin site for my 2002 Base MDX with 50,000 Miles.
Other causes? I'll see the dealer and see what esle is causing this. But its really annoying. |

| Definitely suspension problem -> warranty item, which should include replacing the worn tires! |

This is not correct. My aged memory played tricks on me. The people saying suspension are correct. In the MDX case it would probably be struts since there are no shocks.

OK...the problem, as it turns out, was finally related to failed front wheel bearings.
After replacing my tires (Michelin MXV 4 Plus) once, the problem persisted and we tracked it down because the problem, with the new tires got worse than ever.
My master mechanic found that the font wheel bearings were shot. This, according to him, was likely due to the prior removal of the axels during the transmission repalcement that was done under factory warranty at the dealership.
He stated that if the front axels or related components were removed using an impact hammer the shock and vibration of this incorrect tool caused the damage to the wheel bearings that resulted in their deterioration. This then caused the tire cupping and annoying noise.
If your Tranny was replaced under warranty and you are now experiencing such noise (Wherring, or cupping sound) have your front wheel bearings checked...
Upon replacement the car is quiet as it should be, the handling and road noise were dramaatically improved.

What? Hammer and shock caused damage to wheel bearings? This seems highly unlikely to me. I would like to hear SuperTech's take on this.
