| I recently brought my 2002 MDX in for service, due to the engine revving uncontrolably upon acceleration. It sounded like the engine couldn't shift itself into the right gear. I would remove my foot from the gas and try to get it to kick down then start over. That usually worked. The car would also randomly shudder when I tried to accelerate. I just heard from the Acura Service guy, and he told me that I have an internal transmission problem with the car. He told me this had nothing to do with the 2nd gear transmission recall that the car had been serviced for previously. The shudder could be due to another recall of the EGR, but he couldn't say for sure, until the transmission issue was addressed. The car has 77,000 miles on it. Any advice on how to get this repair covered? I didn't buy any extended warranties on the car, but I didn't know if anyone else had a similar problem that Acura covered? I'm looking for some guidance and advice, as I've never had something like this happen before. Thanks. |

Bummer, you can try to get the dealer to goodwill it based on some of the 01's and 02's experiencing this problem. Or maybe you just pay the labor....in any case here are a bunch of threads on the tranny problems, print out the good ones and use it to work out a deal with the dealer, regional manager or Acura Customer Care. Good Luck!!!

If you haven't heard, the early MYs (01 and 02) do have a tendency for the transmission to fail. Many have said that Acura has been kind enough to cover the expense (or at least part of it) as a goodwill gesture. There is some grumbling that Acura should cover all tranny failures past the warranty as part of a recall, but who knows if and when that will happen.
So, be nice, get on your dealer's good side and call Acura customer service once your dealer has affirmed that your X's transmission has indeed failed. Good luck! |

| Thanks for the info. I just got off the phone with the Service guy, and he told me that they will try their best to get Acura to cover the problem, but I'm not optimistic. I asked if the problem could be related to the gear recall, and he doubted it. He was saying something about clutches and how they affect the gears and that they think that's the problem? I wish I knew more about cars... I feel like he's speaking a different language. |

My friend has a 2002 Honda Odyssey. It has a 5 speed automatic also. His transmission crapped out at 94K miles.
Word is Honda/Acura is covering repair/replacement costs if the vehicle is under 100K miles. |

I'm an Acura/Honda fan and have had 3 Acura's to prove it, but I gotta have second thoughts when my buddies Odyssey's transmission had to be replaced twice and my brothers '03 TL had to have his transmission replaced, makes me definately have second thoughts.
In all cases, Acura/Honda has taken care of them so this was definately the right move as my brother and friend is happy. No car is perfect, but the transmission is not a componenet that should be questionable. |
