I'm kinda at a computer crossroad and wondering what some of you guys think. My old Abit IC7 gmax2 mobo went out. It was holding a pent 4 (socket 478) , 1 gig ddr, 2 120gig WD hardrives in Raid, 1 200 gig WD as backup, and geforce 5600.

Ok my question is should i just get another socket 478 board or is it time to upgrade to a socket 775 with PCI-e card?? I use my computer mainly for gaming, surfing, and more gaming. Cost wise - another socket 478 board around 100 bucks. Upgrading i would need a new board, new cpu, and probably new graphics card, and probably new memory (ddr2), i would guess probaly 700 bucks total.

Any thoughts welcomed. Its not really a cost issue but more a "does the cost justify the increased performance" issue, i.e. is the gaming that much better, is video editing quicker, etc. thanks

Hey... most of us can't wait for the computer to break down... because when it happens, it's time to upgrade to something newer/faster!!

What do you mean "went out" have you tried clearing out the CMOS and loading default setting.

I cant even get to CMOS. I replaced the powersupply thinking it was that. I totally redid my cpu cooler thinking it was overheating for some unknown reason. It would boot after i would wait 5 min making me think it was overheating somehow. It is so inconsistent. So I'm thinking motherboard now. Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks.

there are some boards with socket 775 using DDR memory. Don't need to jump to DDR II if u have limited budget.

Or, since u r replacing it with another CPU anyway, try out the Athlon64 socket 939 which mostly still using DDR RAM. Some of the MB can still have AGP slot if u want to. Therefore, u will only need to change the board and CPU. :)

How far do you get when booting?

Anyway, I just bought a
Mach Speed Matrix P4M800 Via Socket 478 MicroATX mobo at tigerdirect with an Intel 2.9 GHz chip bundled for 79.99 AR.

The mobo by itself is 49.99 AR. See link

Hmmm so it doesn't even POST? With the CPU, MEM and GPU

Nope sometimes it didnt even post.

Well I replaced the Abit IC-7 gmax2 board with an Asus P4p800 deluxe and it is up and running again. The bad part was that i had my drives configured in Raid and Abit uses Silicone raid controller and Asus uses Promise raid controller. Luckily my friend had the exact same set up as me so i swapped drives into his computer and was able to save all the data.

Thanks for all the responses. Through all of this messing around I've decided to upgrade my video card to a geforce 6800 gt haha :2:
