:3: Crap, failed the Emission Inspection test today at 30,150 miles  :3: The tech said the gas cap failed the seal test (he repeated the test and it failed both times) - he also said that this was a typical problem for Hondas  I have 15 days to replace it and retest it.
I'll call the dealer and demand a warranty replacement. We'll see what happens. BTW: The tech said the dealer won't be surprised by the call.
Has anyone else experienced this in their Honda and/or Acura? |

| Whle my parts department keps caps in stock, it's usually because someone lost one. I rarely have to replace one because it failed a leak test. |

| Just to sneak through the inspection, you might try a light coating of a non petroleum grease (ie, silicon). It will seal the gas cap temporarily. Also check there is no contamination on the gas cap mating surface. |

Well the tech was right, dealer has experienced this "problem" - dealer says that many local inspection shops use the incorrect hose to test MDX gas caps  I made an appointment to have Acura test the seal (they do state inspections; so have the same test equipment) - if it fails it'll be a warrantly replacement, if it passes I'll have paper to prove it when I return to the original inspection station. Appointment is Saturday morning. |

I was told by my salesman that the dealer will give free state emission and inspection as long as I own the vehicle. :)
Do you think this is why? |

Two points:
While any of my cars are under warranty, I always have the inspections done at the dealer. This way, if there is a failure, 99 out of 100 times it is a warranty item which the dealer will take care of.
In New York, the dealer collects the inspection fee for the state. I have never heard of a New York state inspection free of charge! Maybe in your state it is different.
I just cannot imagine Acura sending $35 to New York State on my behalf.

Dear msu79gt82
I note that you are driving an '06 Infiniti M35.
I have an '04 Audi A8L that is coming off lease and I was thinking of replacing it with the M35.
While the A8 is a wonderful road car, the MMI (similar to the idrive in BMW) is driving me nuts!.
Each time I get back into my MDX, I realize how wonderfully laid out the controls are. In fact my MDX is in the dealer for maintenance and I was given a TSX as a loaner. Within 5 minutes I understood where all the controls are - it is so intuitive.
I have had the Audi now for almost a year and I still have to go to the owner's manual to find controls, for instance the outside heated mirrors - no button - just comes on when the rear defroster comes on - but then again I had to go to the manual to figure out which control that was!
Finally, the A8 is a very large car and I feel my needs would be met by something the size of an A6, MB350AWD or M35X.
I need AWD as I ski a lot and use the MDX. So I must leave my wife an AWD while I am away (the Boxster does not do well in the snow)
Your input will be appreciated.
Many thanks!

Good luck with that! Might be the very first time that a salesman was incorrect....
I never go to the dealer for inspections- too far, too expensive, too slow...
I've NEVER had a car fail California emissions (and I am in a special area too) prior to 210k miles....although once the gas cap did fail and he told me to run over to autozone and get a replacement while he finished the rest of the inspection...

Geez, you get everything for free. Wasn't it you who gets the first oil change free too? You must have paid up for them to be giving you all these things. Dealers don't give away profit. |

Be careful what you wish for. I have a free LOF coupon from an acura dealer, but I choose not to cash it. Don't want the undersized fram filter and bulk 5w-20 oil, and the last time I took it in the fool tech stripped the drain plug. Lessons learned . . . |

The State of Texas sets inspection fees, so that is not a problem. I've used the dealer before because inspections fees are based on the testing county and I did not live in the same county the dealer is in. However as of last year all 7 counties around Houston cost the same, now requirimg the same level of emissions tests. |

Simply put I love the M35, one heck of a car for the money. Regarding the M35 vs Audi A6 (the 6 is a better comparison to the M35) there are major interior styling differences. When I went sedan shopping I just could not warm up to the European interior styling. I like the BMW exterior but not the interior. Ditto, Audi and MB. I bring it up because the M's interior is the only point of disagreement in media reviews and internet forum talk - many love it and many hate it.
I seriously considered the RL, the M, and the GS. I tried hard to like the RL, but could not. Acura may have hit Home Runs with the MDX and the new 3rd Gen TL, but they did not with the RL and sales figures reflect that. Assuming you like the M interior from a style perspective I believe you will find the controls very intuitive.
Visit www.infiniti-driver.com (dedicated to the M) and www.freshalloy.com (general Infiniti, will an M section) for more details. |

Well it turns out that Honda/Acuras from 2004 on require a special testing cap at the inspection station. Acura published a Service News for dealers in Dec '04 regarding the issue. The strange thing is that the end cap part number on the emission machines NEVER changed. Machines/parts built before 2004 will cause a gas cap perssure Failure; the same part manufactured 2004 and after will work fine. There is a "dimple" marker inside the new cap to distinguish it from the old cap.
Dealership armed me with all the pertinent data (including a copy of the Service News paper with pictures) and their test reslts printout and I returned to the inspection station to retest. Talked to the station manager and he said they had three machines; two built in 1994 and one brand new one. Sure enough the 1994 machine (the one used last Monday) had no "dimple" and the new one did - cap passed no problem. |
