Rust on rear hatch - '04 @ 35K - Click HERE for Original Thread

Much to my dismay, I have several rust spots forming on the rear hatch of my '04. These are all forming where the large brushed chrome Acura bar contacts the rear hatch. Just a guess here, but I'm thinking there isn't any sort of filler or gasket between the two pieces to prevent damage to the paint at the contact points.

Anyone else have this problem? I am going to the dealer tomorrow to show them. They indicated they would take care of it, but I'm concerned it's the start of and symptomatic of a bigger problem.

Thank goodness the car is under lease -- it will be Honda's problem in another year.

Is it rust on the paint, in the paint , coming from under the trim piece?

Whatever it is, it's covered by a 5 year, unlimited miles warranty.

It is covered ONLY if it is "rust-through"

I disagree. Rust that does not perferate, but is caused by a defect in materials or workmanship is specifically covered. See actual page 28 of the warranty book attached (page 32 of 44 in Adobe). "This warranty does not cover surface rust on the underbody or any other part of the vehicle except body panels.

Same thing happened on my wifes 03 MDX and the dealer repainted the hatch under warranty. They said it was common and it is caused by Acura not having a gasket between the hatch and the chrome handle.
