We bought an Acura MDX new in 2002. I bought into the Honda/Acura quality story and the fine service they offer.
Since we bought it, the following repairs have been necessary within warranty (48k miles) and have resulted in 10 trips to the dealer:
Passenger door rattling when closing - Internals came apart
Drivers side door panel loose - not installed properly from factory
Total Failure of the Safety Retraint system - SRS Control Module replaced
BSMs faded and needed replacement
Rattling from front end - First Coil springs were replaced and then strut bushings after the first fix proved innefective.
Rear Heater blower failed
Some of the above repairs have required multiple visits to correct.
The following recalls have been performed as well:
Serpintine belt Idler pully replaced
Transmission inspected for heat damage, transmission either replaced or oiler kit retrofitted. Oiler kit was installed on ours
On top of all the problems we've had, I get to look forward to the ass-pounding the dealer gives you any time you want routine service performed on the car. I could go on about problems with service, but the bottom line is they are not exempt from sucking just because the Acura name is on the building. In fact other than having a nicer bathroom and waiting room, they suck as bad as any I've seen.
We had brought the car in for the transmission inspection in NOV of 2004 when the car had 41k on it. A few months later, the wife complained of an occasional hesitation when acclerating slowly or holding a steady speed and said a few times she thought she heard a feint rumbling noise. She tried many times to show me this problem but it was very intermittent and never experienced it with me in the car. Since it rarely occurred, we thought no big deal. Near the end of last summer, I did experience the hesitation problem, but it was really not a big deal and nothing I was about to go and have fixed until it got worse.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago. The car now has 70k on it. The hesitation problem still occurs occasionaly, but again its not terribly noticable. We recieve a recall notice from Acura stating that many EGR Valve failures have been seen and an inspection is required. Plus, they are extending the warranty on the EGR valve to 80k. Likely symptoms are hesitation under light acceleration. Great!! This sounds like the intermittent problem we've been having. So we schedule the car at the dealer and drop it off last Wednesday.
After we dropped the car off, I get a call from the dealer a few hours later. They tell me my EGR valve is fine. However, the hesitation we feel is because of a faulty shutter valve in our torque converter caused by debris in the transmission fluid, plus the fluid is dark and burnt. The fix: We need a new transmission. They can do the job for $4500. WTF?!?!?!.
The dealer won't help with the cost of the repair. Had I brought it in last year, maybe they could have done something with Acura. I guess I'm an idiot for not realizing that a slight hesitation that I probably couldn't demonstrate meant my transmission was failing. Anyway, out on the MDX forums there seems to be many MDX transmission stories very similar to mine, enough so it is considerend a known problem with 01s and 02s. Sounds like some have been successful in getting help from Acura but some haven't. I've contacted Acura and I'm currently waiting to hear back from them.
Too bad. We love the car, but hate it for all the problems it's had compared to Fords and GMs we've owned in the past. Maybe its just me, but I just can't get over the fact a major component like a transmission is failing so prematurely.
Sorry for the long post. Needed to tell someone.
NOT me, I think this guys is in Mass. |

He said it was from another forum.
Luxury car, no one said the company was 'luxurious'.
And don't tell me because a car is 'luxury' it means it will not have problems. You know better than that. ;)
Maybe it's a good idea to 'step down' to Honda, the common man's car. Seems to be fewer problems. |

| I would never expect a car that was purchased for over 50,000 new would have the transmission fail at 77,500 miles. I had two nissans go for about 250,000 miles with no problems and I currently have one Lexus is300. I must say that Acura is not a luxury company and doesn't even compare to Lexus when it comes to customer service. Not only was Acura headquarters condescending and rude, but there service people were not very intelligent either. I thought I was purchasing a luxury vehicle, apparently Acura wants to be considered with the likes of Ford and GM, and we all know how that ends up?!!? |

What are you a Lexus salesperson or something? In this thread you voice the same rant and say you have one Lexus.
But in this other thread...
http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...15&pagenumber=2
you pretty much say the exact same thing, but you have two Lexus vehicles? So which is it? |

If you paid over $50,000 for an MDX you really do not know how to shop for cars!

| The two previous posts don't matter at all. I am not a Lexus salesperson, but an extremely satisfied customer. IT's true, I've had trouble with my Lexus even out of the warranty period, however, Lexus did the right thing and fixed the car, unlike Acura who told me to go F myself. MY point is Lexus is a reputable company and Acura really doesn't care about there clients. |
