Is there an answer why my 2002 MDX stalls while driving in traffic? It doesn't happen often but my wife says it has happened enough times to start worrying about it. It is the power stearing? Idle? Anyboby have a similar problem?

Idle control or throttle control maybe? I think there were similar posts before.

At what speed/RPM does this happen?
This can create a dangerous situation depending upon where it happens. I would get it into a shop ASAP.

Thanks guys. This happens below 10 mph down to a complete stop.
No other indications just a quiet shut down.

Hey guys sorry to bring this thread back but I'm having this problem too. Happens once in awhile. I just don't want it to happen at the wrong time especially with the family in the car. Gets me a little worried. I'm beginning to think its an ECU problem? Anyone else with this problem? Thanks

At idle when I hold the throttle at a certain 3k or higher for a few seconds then immidiately let off the throttle, the idle drops then the car dies out. So I'm guessing same thing while I'm driving. So maybe its the IAC valve.

If it's for a 2001-02 model, the rotary valve (idle control valve) is the most likely culprit. We usuallu just replace the entire throttle body assembly since we can get that covered under a 7/70 emissions system warranty.

I have an 01. Do we have drive by wire? Can I just replace the IAC and not the whole TB?

Drive-by-wire started in 03, IIRC.

Ok cool, that's good to know. I wasnt sure if the 01 had it cause I know my 01 and 02 is300's had DBW throttle body. Hmmm in that case it won't be so hard to put in an aftermarket throttle body too later on ;)

I seriously doubt there is an aftermarket throttle body for the J35 engine out there. You'll have to forgive Edelbrock, Comptech, or any other tuner for not recognizing the blistering hot market for hot rodding minivans and SUVs.
The IAC valve can be replaced on it's own. But if you have a nice dealer, they can replace the whole throttle body under warranty if you're under 70k miles. |

Henson:
First, try to get the code. If you have an OBD-II reader, it should be easy enough.
Second, as Supertech said, it could be covered under the 7/70K emission warranty, so check out that possibility.
Third, you can remove the IAC pretty easily, then separate the rotary valve from the solenoid. After that, you can really spray clean the valve with some throttle body cleaner to remove all the gunk in there. I did that when my IAC acted up 30k miles ago right after the warranty expired, and it still works now. The whole job took about 1-2 hours, but I would understand if you'd rather be surfing :)
Good luck |

If you do decide to fix it yourself, do NOT spray any type of cleaner into the throttle body. In the end...you'll only make it worse.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll be replacing it myself. I have plenty of experience with custom turbocharging and building the 2JZ motors (supra and lexus motors). But to be honest I've never really looked into the engine of my X. Lol. As for an aftermarket throttle body ill probably end up doing a custom job if I do decide on a TB upgrade. It will probably only be good for top end though. I really wanted to turbo the X because coming from a 650+whp lexus is300 the X feels a bit short of hp and tq. Hehe. But from what I've read and heard from my tech friends at honda, the damn tranny sucks. Anyways thanks again for the replies guys. Ill get that fixed then head out to the beach ;)
