| I'm thinking about getting the towing package on my mdx, mainly because I would like to carry a motorcycle on the back. Has anyone done this. A couple of sites indicate that I need a certain "class" of hitch ( I believe it was a class 4-however I can't remember for sure) so as to carry a 1000 lbs.........does anyone know what the hitch classification is on the mdx dealer installed hitch, or what amount of weight it is rated for? I think this is different than what the allowable trailer tow weight can be.  |

Class 3 hitch is the "standard" for what's installed on the MDX, and this is more than sufficient for carrying a 1000lb bike. I think the weight limits are 3500 lbs (weight) to 4500 or 5000 for distributed weight.
I'm sure you could get away with a lesser hitch, but for flexibility and resale the class III is probably the way to go.
There are great deals on hitches and related parts at www.etrailer.com, and you could certainly save some cash by going this route. Acura recommends (possibly warranty issue) that you install the transmission and PS coolers when you install a hitch, so you should probably consider those parts in your overall plan. |

The bike isn't going to be on a trailer, is it?

| From what it sounds like and until the OP post back. It seems like he will be carring it as opposed to towing. I think the tongue weight for the MDX is 450 IIRC for just two occupants. |

Gotcha - actually carrying the motorcycle on the hitch - not pulling it.
Warzau - you are correct - tongue weight is 450lbs - good enough to carry one average dirt bike, but not safe for 1000 lbs. |

if its 1k pounds I assume its not a sportbike.
Also, how would you lift up a 1k pound bike?

Cool, but if you have a pick up like the lady in the pic why not just PIITB(bed, sickos) :8:
Bike trailers can't be that big, that would probably be your best bet unless you think you can get it in the back or on the roof ;)

Butch,
I wouldn't recommend a versa-hauler or similar unit for an MDX. I don't think the tongue weight is sufficient. I thought about getting one for my sport/track bike, but decided against it. I ended up with a single Kendon trailer. It is so easy to tow behind the X. You barely know its there. When not in use, I fold it up and it takes up about as much space as a motorcycle in the corner of my garage. They also make a double version. Had I to do it over, I'd buy the double. However, I got a great deal off Craigslist for the single so I can't complain. Here's a pic of my MDX at the track. You can see the trailer folded up on the right. My bicycle and fuel can are on either side of it. I used it to tie down my canopy as well.
