I have a new 2006 MDX about 30 days old and I keep hearing a lound thud or thump sound when braking? This seems odd. Any thoughts? Am I in trouble with this car? Is there anything that can be done?

Thanks in advace!

I have the same problem with my 2006 MDX. Had the car for less than 30 days and have a thud sound from the rear of the car. Notice it particularly during stop and go traffic. Sometimes it is loud and disturbing. I don't think I can live with this sound for the time I own it, especially after paying so much for the car!

Went to the service center and they said that it was a noise from sloshing in the gas tank. Honda claims that the new gas tank in the 2006 MDX is supposed to prevent sloshing noises from the tank.

They also tightened the suspensions and looked a bit at brakes. However, the problem is still there. They said there was nothing to be done. I think this is ridiculous for a new car.

Some posts out there mention the brake caliper but when I asked the service rep, he said that this was only an issue with 2004 MDX's.

I'm still in disbelief and would like to hear some success stories with this issue.

Any ideas?

Mine is also 2006 with the same frustrating and ridiculous problem.
I just took it to the dealer and was told the same thing "there is nothing can be done". Driving it these day, I am scared to brake, scared to accelerate quickly, because I am scared of frustrateing myself with this noise!!!!!!!!
I have been an Acura owner for so long. I love all the Acuras that I had owned. And now I am so sad every time getting in the MDX.
To me this problem is UNACCEPTABLE for such LUXURY car as the MDX.
THERE MUST BE SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT THIS.
Anyone out there knows a way to address this directly to Acura.

The "brake-click" and "gas tank slosh" have been there since 2001. I agree that it is annoying and hard to believe that Acura has yet to address the problem!

How could "gas tank slosh" translate to a thud or thump. The only way I can think of is if the gas tank is not mounted solidly to the vehicle. That problem can be solved!!!

If your service provider can not/will not find/fix the problem then I would give the dealer written notification that I expect resolution of the problem or that I am going to an independent for evaluation. Tell them that you expect then to pay whatever charges are obligated.

I forgot to mention why it make sloshing noise. The service advisor at Acura dealer told me that the gas tank is made of plastic, not metal as other car. I could not belive that is the truth until I went under the car and check it out myself. To my disbelief, IT IS PLASTIC. And of course, plastic can't have the insulation as well as metal.
Just imagine you are caryring a half-empty plastic tank of water vs. a metal one.

Neither plastic nor metal have any sound insulation quality worth mentioning. In fact for what little there is the plastic will provide less noise. Either one could have sprayed on insulation to deaden sound.

However, the thing that is done to prevent noise from fuel sloshing is to make the tank with baffles that prevent excessive sloshing.

Just about every car/truck made in the past two decades has a plastic gas tank. I can't believe some of the BS service advisors pull out to try and pacify customers sometimes.

G is correct. Sloshing is prevented by having baffles (like walls) in the tank. The MDX tank does not have these.

Thank you G and Supertech for all the knowlege that you provided. I had not have known anything about it .
My thought is once the dealers say somthing like "There is nothing we can do about it". Is it really something they can not do about it or they just try to pass the bucket? Is there anything that we, as owner/consumer, can do about this kind of issue.
I went into Acura website trying to see if there is a section that consumer can post a comment/complain, but could not find a way to do it.

There is nothing we can do about it because there really is nothing we can do. There's no hidden agenda on this one. This is the way the vehicle is designed. Unless they redesign the gas tank to make it have baffles (with less capacity I'm sure), and make this part available to dealers, it's out of the dealers' hands. And if they hadn't redesigned the tank by now...it's never going to happen.

Your choices:

Live with it.

Trade it in for something else...and test drive the hell out of whatever that is beforehand so you find all the design flaws before you buy it.

I also have an 2006 MDX and I notice the same sound on the back after braking it is very annoying and I also took it to the dealership and they told me that is something normal and I have to get use to it.

Don't know if you guys saw this news bulletin from Honda/Acura but this is absurd because they mention that they modified the tank to reduce sloshing. I think we need to all write letters and emails to Honda and complain. We cannot be spending over 40K and have to live with this. We own the car and there should be some sort of warrantee or return policy for this ridiculous defect!

Fuel System

The MDX fuel tank reduces sloshing noise, has a driving range by 23 miles and helps to meet LEV-2 Evaporative emission standards. The tank is molded of high-density polyethylene for low weight, freedom from corrosion, and impact resistance. It's positioned immediately ahead of the rear wheels and over the propeller shaft to help guard against collision damage. Corners of the tank are rounded and the inside of the tank is baffled to diminish the likelihood of sloshing-fuel noise. The polyethylene filler pipe and fuel lines are light, not susceptible to corrosion, and resistant to fuel vapor losses. A high-efficiency fuel pump is housed inside the fuel tank. The fuel-filter is a lifetime design that never needs maintenance.

Good luck with that, it's been an issue since 2001 with lots of customer compliants to Acura and the dealers with no resolution. Just because you paid $40K for a vehicle does not guarantee it will be defect free - there are quite a few high end luxury vehicles that are more expensive and have much worse reliability histories (Infiniti QX56, Porsche Cayenne, etc). Would you rather have a minor slosh issue or have your vehicle in the shop all the time for major issues?

Guys, I think so too. We need to do something to voice our frustration about this.
I actually did. I called directly to Acura last week 3/30. today I got a call back from some kind of director of Acura, I forgot to ask for the tittle. He first admitted the problem. But he said he had not really received so many calls complaining about this. He said, that was why nothing has been seriously considered to solve the problem. He now documented my complaint and bring it up to acura.
So if we really want something to be change, let's make some big NOISE, like I did together to Acura. And hopefully something will happen.
The number to call is (800) 382-2238. Let's call them

Man, I hate to jump into the gripe session being new and all, but I have to comment. I just bought a brand new 2006 Touring MDX last month and I noticed the same thing!

Everytime I brake, I hear the thump, especially during city driving. It bugged me, because I didn't know what it was and it made me feel like something was wrong with our new luxury SUV! I mentioned it to my wife and she said she couldn't feel it or hear it, so I let it go.

Now, after reading what you all have said, I know I hear and feel it, BUT I feel better, because I now know it's just the dumb gas tank and apparently nobody can do anything about it! I feel better about that, but I wish it would not do that. This is my first high end vehicle purchase and I want everything to be perfect. Is that so wrong?

Take care all,

Mulder

hmmmmmm we started noticing a "thumping" this weekend.... it almost sounds like the car is scraping when going into a driveway.. but it's not... is that the sound you all are hearing?

Not really... it sounds like a thud or thump sound (non-metallic and kinda muted sound, but can be heard). If it gets louder, we can get a whiplash too:p
mulder
I've noticed that it happens when the fuel tank is half or more empty. When your tank is full, you won't hear it.
shootist
Do you have the third seat up or down? I ask because I've never heard the gas tank thud (in 2 MDX's), but I always have the third seat folded down. I'm wondering if that muffles the thump.
mulder
I have the right side of the third row up and the fuel tank side down.
