This unit was given to me brand new around January 10th. Long story how I got it, but it was a sample for more to be ordered. It retails for about $170 on amazon.com Has a 7" screen. It comes with a 12 volt car adaptor, 120 volt adaptor, rechargeable battery, video out to rca adaptor, and a remote control. We don't have kids but I figured this would be nice for plane trips and the few times we have kids in the backseat of our M DX sans RES.

As soon as I took it out of the box, the screen was unviewable. Lines rhythmically went across the screen. I soon found out they clear up after 15 minutes or so, like the unit needs to warm up. Knowing it did this, I took it on a flight to Memphis anyway. I just had to wait a few minutes for it to warm up and then it was fine. Got a lot of strange looks from other passengers and advice to try switching discs.

A few days after I got back I called Samsung and explained the problem. Even though I didn't have a proof of purchase and it was manufactured in August and therefore technically out of the 90 day waranty, they were nice enough to fix it anway. I had to send it in to some repair facility in NJ. They were nice enough to send me a UPS label. I finally got around to dropping the package off around Jan. 25.

Feb. 10, I start to get curious about when it might come back. No answer at the repair facility, I leave a message. No return message

Feb. 14 I leave another message. Nothing back.

Feb. 16 Another message left. Nothing back.

Feb. 20 I finally speak to a live person. She's the same person who's on the phonebank menu. She's very confused. She accidentally hangs up on me.

I call back and get through to her again. She thinks she knows where it is but needs to put me on hold. I'm now excited except for the fact that I'm on hold with the local hip-hop station. After 90 seconds or so, I'm disconnected.

A few minutes later, my home phone rings, and it's this woman apologizing for disconnecting me. I say "no problem" and on hold I go again.

Someone comes back on the line after 7 minutes and says "yes, we have it". I asked when it might come back. She seems stunned. "What do you mean come back ?" I realize that I'm obviously not the same person she was talking to before, and I may not even be talking to teh same person at this point. She apologizes and puts me on hold. After 6 minutes of horrible radio, I'm once again disconnected.

I had chalked this one up to bad luck. I never paid for it, and really couldn't figure out why I actually needed one anyway. I figured if I never heard back after a couple of months, maybe Samsung would just send me a new one, but if they didn't, oh well.

Yesterday (Monday) my doorbell rang and it was the UPS guy with a package from Samsung. I carefully unwrapped it, connected the battery and put in a disc. Cool ! The screen works. But the screen says "No Disc". I try another disc. And a third. Nothing. I hold down the button that gets engaged when the door is closed and notice the disc isn't even spinning. I also noticed this unit looks like it went on a tour of duty with the army after I sent it off. Or perhaps it played floor hockey while it was gone. I was sure they must have sent me either the wrong one or a "refurbished" unit but to my amazement, the serial number matched the one on the original box which I kept.

I talked to a nice gentleman at Samsung yesterday and they're sending me another shipping label. I'm not holding my breath.

(P.S. sorry about the intentional misspellings :) )
