| those of you that use regular instead of premium.... did you start using it immediately? or did you put in a couple tanks of premium first? |

I started with the regular gas right away. There was no difference in mileage or performance. On a good day, regular gas here in Hawaii is $2.80. Save your money and put it into accessorizing your MDX.:29: |

| I occassionally use regular, usually when I know I'm going to burn through it quickly. You might want to dose it with premium once in a while, just to keep the average octane a bit higher. |

Why does the Pilot take regular fuel and the MDX need premium? Isn't it the same basic engine?
I know Hypertech makes a programmer for Corvettes that allows you to re-program the module to use regular fuel instead of premium (if one desires) while saving all the original settings so they can be restored at a later time. I was wondering if the MDX could also be re-programed in the same manner. |

| It has to do with compression ratio and ignition timing. The higher octane gas is less prone to detonation so with the same compression, you can be more agressive with timing on a higher octane fuel, thus more horses. The ECM will retard timing if it senses detonation, thus allowing lower octane fuel to be used. I have run both in the X and have noticed no real difference. In my Syclone, it is a completely different story, but that has to do with forced induction. |

Were you answering the question with regards to the Pilot?
Because all the parameters are the same as the MDX. Of course, spark curve, etc. may be slightly different, but I have doubts, but it's really the same engine in mechanical dimensions, etc.
I never checked fuel requirement for the Saturn Vue V6, likely regular. |

Same as Pilot, Unleaded fuel 87.
MDX is the only one among the 4 engines with the same spec
(MDX, Pilot, Vue, Odyssey) that "requires" premium unleaded.
Hard to not to think it has more to do with the "luxury" status of the X... |

MDX has 9 hp more, right? Does this have anything to do with engine tuning or is it all the exhaust system? Just wondering if that is one factor in the octane difference? |

When the Pilot first premiered, the only difference was 3 less ft lbs of torque. |
