Natural Waxes vs. Synthetic Sealants - How To Choose - Click HERE for Original Thread

Here is an issue where you'll encounter endless debate with hardcore supporters on both sides, swearing by their method and refuting all others. The experienced auto enthusiast knows that neither one is "better" than the other and understands that each has its advantages and disadvantages. Before you decide that the product "the other guy" uses must be best because he says so, take a look at your needs and base your decision on the facts. Do you want the ultimate shine, or do you need longer lasting protection? For those who really want to know and understand the difference between Carnauba and Sealants, and how to choose which is better for your car, there is a very good explanation here:

Autogeek.net

I strongly suggest reading the info in the link, but here is a basic summary:

Carnauba or Natural Waxes
Pros - more natural gloss, does not inhibit the paint's ability to breathe, deeper shine, easy to apply
Cons - only lasts 6-8 weeks

Synthetic or Polymer Sealants
Pros - durability, lasts longer, less frequent re-applications, some are easy to apply
Cons - although many synthetic sealants are now available just as readily as waxes, the higher quality ones are generally more expensive and require purchase of several products for proper use. This need for multi-product application also requires a greater initial time commitment. A potential hazard of some polymer sealants is that the lower quality ones may not allow your paint to naturally expand and contract, causing cracked paint and "spider-webbing". Additionally, if the accumulated layers are not removed, after an extended length of time your paint's finish may cloud or yellow.

Thanks for the read Morph-nice summary. That 6-8 weeks projection on the longevity of carnauba wax certainly undermines the longstanding assumption that it's Ok to wax your vehicle twice per year. But as the article points out, environmental conditions strongly influence how long it lasts.

IMHO, this is a better description of the differences between today's sealants vs. carnauba waxes

If you own a black or red vehicle, you should probably try a glaze plus Pinnacle Souvervan wax at least once while you own it. You may be shocked at how different it looks compared to sealants like Zaino and Klasse.

Then you can decide if it's worth having to apply it 3x as often as Zaino. In my case the answer is no, except for a 2-seater or compact car (too much work otherwise).

I don't mind the extra work if needed because the EXCERCISE is great !
