LOOKING TO PURCHASE A HARD COVER ROOF TOP BOX CARRIER FOR A 2003 MDX. BESIDES THE ACURA PART WHICH RUNS $285, ARE THERE ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVES THAT WOULD WORK?
screbr
Too many other options too list.....

Thule and Yakima are the most common aftermarket rack companies, and many of their boxes will fit the MDX.

I have a Thule Mountaineer; great for long ski trips. Thule's newer boxes are the Evolution series, which have a more aerodynamic design and improved styling. My box and many of the other models are very long, and given the fact that you can't adjust the crossbars on the MDX, the box can sit too far back and interfere with the rear hatch (especially if you have a spoiler). I had to drill new holes in mine to bring it forward far enough to clear the spoiler. The stock fittings on the Mountaineer work fine with the stock MDX cross bar, and both Thule and Yakima make fit packs so that all their accessories fit on just about any car out there.

Check out thule.com, and their website can guide you to the options for the MDX and a roof top box.

A $300 price tag ain't bad, as many of the newer Thule boxes run $500-800.

PS - you can check out my gallery for some pics of the Thule box on my MDX.

I have a Thule one also. Like screbr, I had to drill an extra set of holes in the box to make it fit w/out interfering with my tailgate. Once I did that, it worked great. It was easy to drill the holes, my box actually had a template for it. Mine is long enough to hold my 210cm snowboard, plus a ton of other gear.

One suggestion: get one that opens from both sides. When you are loading it up, it is incredibly helpful to be able to load/unload from either side.

When my kids get out of hand in the back seat, I threaten to make them ride in the roof box. :2:
