genemish,
That's a Weimaraner for sure! :D Great shot! Did you ever get one? Wonderful dogs, lots of personality, but extremely headstrong and demanding.
lmeans,
So sorry for your loss. :( I understand completely how you feel. We just lost our Misti (Weimaraner) last Tuesday. Had her for 14 years and she was definitely our child. Sure is lonely around here without her. We were sooo excited about getting the 'X' so we could chauffer her around in style and comfort. She just couldn't hold out that long.
I have tons of pics but most aren't digitized yet. Of course, my posting will always contain one of them. I'll post a few once I get them downsized to fit. |

Great pic, but Kalif looks more like he is in a "feed me" rather than a "drive me" position!! One that I assume he is in quite frequently judging by his not-quite-Jenny-Craig figure!:D:D |

Hmmm?, a family portrait at this time might require the use of a tranquilizer gun since the new puppy torments the cats which then upsets the old dog who then tries to protect the cats by chasing the puppy...or maybe I need a visit by Colin Powell to get the picture!;) |

Just to set the record straight, Kalif is a 1 1/2 year old cat with a very heavy coat (rescued at 3 weeks old by my wife who fed him with a bottle), he is one of our family. He is anything but overweight. Here he is at a very early age, approx 1 month. |

After an exhaustive search and what seemed like an impossibility, we were finally able to locate another female Weimaraner puppy. Supplies are limited, you know.
Anyway, we picked her up this past Sunday and named her Summer (a.k.a. our new lawnmower ).:)
A little over 8 weeks old and almost 16 lbs of pure energy!

You guys all have great pets, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them and reading about them. I had a miniature schnauzer growing up. A couple years ago, she retired to Idaho with my dad. Last year, she had to be put to sleep - she was 16, it was time. :(
So technically I haven't had a dog in a while, and I won't for a while either - my lifestyle just isn't dog friendly right now, much as I miss having one.
But in the hopefully not too distant future, if this thread is still alive, I'll post a pic of my new baby - by then I'll have my new X, too. I've already had friends tell me that I need at least one big dog to put in the X - I couldn't agree more!!!:D
In the meantime, I'll live vicariously through the rest of you - you've given me plenty of matieral - a pig, a couple of chincillas, a turtle, a fish, and countless dogs and cats. I love it!

Hi Remery. That is a good question! :) My MDX is only 1 week old, so I didn't have a chance to take good pictures. This said, my pet is really happy with the new SUV and the fact that he can stick his head out of the back window, since it is much closer to the back where he stays and the sits can fold... :) More pictures to come... :)
Sorry about your pet too... I know how it is... While living in a different country as a kid, we had a black German Shepherd actually from Germany. I grew up with that dog. She was a wonderful dog, but she barked a lot! So, our neighbours poisoned her by throwing a piece of meat with poison in it... :(
So, I trained my dog not to take food from anybody except people I say is OK... |

"Maxer" as seen in the first post and the inspiration for this entire thread left us last night just before midnight. He was 14, a pile of energy and a real companion right up to the end.
Late afternoon on Monday, he suddenly became pale and wobbly. We ran him to the vet and discovered a tumor had ruptured near his stomach, causing massive internal bleeding and he would not survive the night.
Saving him would have required a blood transfusion and antibiotics with the hope of stabilizing him for emergency surgery, and this would only succeed if he could retain the blood. The Vet gave him a 20% chance of making it; due, in part, to his 14 happy years on earth.
We were faced with the dilemma of “going for it” because WE wanted him HERE, even though “Heaven” was pulling at the other end. We were also concerned that surgery might reveal cancer. In any case, he might never enjoy the same quality of life.
We opted to euthanize him and he was already so weak, he never flinched. Sometimes you just can’t outweigh the inevitable. I’ve been wrestling with the decision we made all day. It all happened so suddenly. He was loved and pampered on earth. I hope he found a downfilled cloud up there. |

DMor,
I know how sad it is to lose a faithful set of 4 paws even though your set was quite a bit smaller than mine. You had to make the same decision we had to and it was the right one for our pets. Focus not on the that Max is gone now but on all the joy that he brought to your family while he was around. This will likely provide some comfort over the next few months since it did for me. |

DMor,
So sorry to read of your loss. Having made the same decision myself, I understand how gutwrentching it is. But rest assured, you did the right thing.
As my wife has been quick to point out to me, its interesting that we are permitted to make that decision for our pets, sparing them those last few days or even months of pain, yet we are unable to help ourselves in that same way.
Each of the pets in my life continues to occupy a large part of my heart and memories and will until my time comes. Dogs and cats only want one thing from us, love. And in return they give us their unqualified love. No judgement, no bias, no heartache, no nothing. Simply absolute adoration. It gets no better than that.

yeah, 4 dogs... :)
we almost had 5... we found a dog in antigua that we really loved but it was just too difficult to get her from there to here... plus she was apparently happy and definitely not abused... but we can't seem to resist when we go to the PestMart or PetCo on the weekends with the rescue folks... ;)
if it's really rainy, we meet them at the door with a towel but they have free rein most of the time since we don't usually close the back door (it's glass and we can't put a dog door in...)
go ahead and get that new dog... you guys will love it... |

Invest in "uncontrollable mud"! Visit: http://www.petdoors.com/.
Seriously, I've had an (old) "pet eze" door for 25 years and couldn't live w/o it. If it's really muddy or something...you can always use an inside gate (smaller dogs) and that might keep them from trashing the entire house.
These are great and you can leave the house w/o guilt... or fear of leaving the house open for potential intruders.
When I bought ours, there were few options, but NOW you can get anything imaginable. |

We built the house before the dogs came so all the carpet is light colored. Luckily most of the downstairs is hardwood and tile. We are replacing the carpet with hardwood in the next year or so.... |

Learned my lesson. In my house in GA we got everything replaced after we bought it - with light berber in bedrooms. Then we got a chocolate lab puppy. Needless to say, light berber was not light a couple months later. After the puppy learned to take care of the business outside, his hair contnued showing on the light berber.
In this house in MA, we put dark berber, hardwood and ceramic tile - MUCH better!!! |
|
|
| jswift2000 |
Desant,
I know the feeling. We have a chol lab who is so great but our entry to the house is white tile and when he comes in from the rain or if he's shedding, it turns to a muddy brown. Were changing the tile this spring to a tan color in hoped it will hide the dirt better. |

i saw this poem a long time ago in an article (it was either the san fran chron or examiner which should give you some idea how long ago it was...) about how dogs have this own special place in their heads that explains their sometimes inexplicable behavior. for some reason, i memorized after a single reading and it always seems to make me tear up when i think about it...
when he puts his wet nose
on your best clothes
never say naught nor threat
for the good lord knows
you can buy more clothes
but never a friend like that
can't top that... :) |
|
|

It is very interesting how dogs get attached to us and visa versa. When I got my choc. lab as a 7-week puppy, he would not leave my sight.
First night after we got him, he could't sleep in his huge crate, I put my old leather laptop bag in there (with my smell on it), and he leaned over to it and fall asleep.
Eveytime I am on a business trip, my wife tells me that he gets a dirty cloth of mine from the laundry bin and slips on it.
Everywhere we travel, we try to take him with us, because he adds so much to our lives.
When I was a kid, I grew up with a black German Shepherd puppy, which of course became a huge dog. I loved that obnoxious, crazy, untrained animal. And one of the big tragedies of my childhood was when some crazy neighbor poisoned our dog because she was barking too much. I am surprised my parents did not shoot the bastard! :11:
So, when we got a new house in GA, the first thing we did we went looking for dogs. Since my wife was afraid of German Shepherds, we settled on a lab - and it has been a fantastic choice!!! :) |
