Surely you have something to hug and hold other than your MDX...or, for those 'in waiting', your purchase agreement.

Post a pic of your 4 footed friend...or maybe one with feathers, scales...slime...or whatever.

Here's our Max. He's our favorite import (Maltese) and 13yrs young. :)
Ken Scott
We love our dog but he has added a puncture on the armrest and a scratch to the passanger door on our MDX!
We always jump at the chance to share family pet pictures.

No physical damage to the car by Bailey, just a lot of shedding blonde hair on the black interior.

Here she is after catching and tearing apart her "cat burglar" toy.

Looks like a Weimaraner (aka "Grey Ghost"). Had one a while back. Great dogs, but hyper -- need lots of exercise. Get him to run next to your MDX, which you drive all the time, and he'll have plenty of exercise.....

Creme,

I gotta ask. How does the pig use the bathroom? I mean, do you have a litter box (like a cat) or does the pig let you know (like a dog)?

Just curious.
Crem de la SUV
Both, actually.

When she was a baby, she went right to a litter box, just like a cat.

When she got older, she would ring a bell that was hung by the door (yes, with her snout).

As an adult, she has her own house out back, with heat, music, stuffed toys, and artwork on the walls.

A lucky pig.

Couldn't let this one go by. Tell me, what does a pig play with? I can just see you standing in your back yard saying "Winifred, go root out a truffle for Daddy!";) ;)

Also does her Baconess like to ride in the MDX and if so how do you get her in?
genemish
Does your pig watch Winnie the Pooh.. and if so, how did she react? :)

What about cooking channels? :) You know what Emeril would say..

By the way, VERY CUTE pig..

Crem de la SUV
Rem, Gene,

Winnie's primary interest is the aquisition of food. A very serious minded pig; "play" is not in her vocabulary. The stuffed toys have been relegated to use as pillows for her head after a busy day of grazing. She will do "tricks" - though not out of the goodness of her heart, but because of the promise of a little reward snack.

I'm convinced that Winnie will not share any truffles that she finds.

She's not too fond of the car, doesn't like G-forces much. The anxiety makes her snout sweat. We used to load her up into the back seat of a '91 Honda Civic without too much trouble, but I had to sit back there with her to keep her from hopping into the front. She did like going out for fries, or an ice cream, though.

She hasn't made it into the MDX yet, but I think she would need a ramp up to the tailgate. I don't think I'll have pictures of that soon, though, as we now have a nice country vet that makes housecalls.

Winnie doesn't care much for TV, so we just put on a little classical music for her from time to time, in an effort to soothe the savage beast. Again, she's more cute than friendly!
AtlantaMDX
Yeah, I grew up on a farm and was always amazed at just how smart pigs are. And they are actually very clean. People tend to associate them with mud (which they only use to cool themselves). Give them some water and they don't need the mud. :)

I don't want to turn this thread into a support group, but I've been away from the forum for a few days because of my cat Fred. He's been a diabetic for six months, and I have been giving him insulin shots to keep him above ground. He's been doing well, but last week when he went in the kitty hospital to have his teeth cleaned, the doc told me he was in renal failure. I have decided to do what I have to do to continue to keep him above ground as long as he feels well. I won't go into all the gory details of kitty dialysis, but he tolerates it quite well and it seems that we will be together for a while longer.

Here is a picture of this magnificent guy that has been my little buddy for the last 14 years.

I hear ya Crem. Max the thin one in my feline trio is 13-years old and the best cat I have ever had. He as been losing weight for some time which may be an indication of kidney problems. I had three other cats that had the same thing happen. Cats disguise their discomfort quite well so watch your little buddy closely and make sure he's really ok with the treatment.

rem,

He's not too keen about the needles, but he's feeling quite well overall. He gets a subcutaneous fluid drip while he's eating, so it's not like I have to restrain him or anything too upsetting. Just a little extra commitment on my part, and he's acting like his old self.

gene,

Winnie would like nothing more than to bury her snout in a cat's soft fur. The cats are mortified.

ghm,

Thank you for your kind words. Isn't it curious, though, that people do not want their pets to outlive them - no one wants to wonder what will happen to their pet afterward.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat. That is a very sad story.

I know the feeling although my cat does not have diabetes. He got his rear end chewed by another cat (I guess you can call it a butt chewin' :) ) and it got infected really bad. The vet said that (I don't know how to spell this, but here it goes) gang green and it started to affect furballs lungs. The vet kept him for a few days and cleaned the area, took off the dead skin (you could see way down into his muscles, it was gross, a huge hole) I picked furball and the vet gave me some soap to clean it and a pill to get rid of the infection and now he's pretty much back to normal. A little more mellow. So I know a little how your feeling. My husband thought I was crazy spending so much money on him because he's "just a cat" but to me it was worth every penny to keep him alive.

Mantis-

Sorry to hear that! Arowanna's are incredible..some say they give "luck and fortune" (I am sure you know that). Odd that you didn't consider it as a pet . . .you give it a home ( a large capaciity tank I am sure), feed it when needed, and enjoy watching it rule its world.
However, in some countries it is a delicacy . . a feast.

No previous photo..to remember it by?

IMO, I sympathize your loss.

What a great thread!:) We live in our house because our 4 dogs allow us to so we can feed them. (they have a problem with opening the cans - no thumbs :( ) When I was looking at SUVs (for the dogs), I would take them down to try out the back to make sure they fit comfortably. Some dealerships were very understandings and encouraged me to bring them in (really wanted to sell me a car). The Acura place here in town let me do it but were very hesitant (I can understand - dog hair and possible scratches, etc.). Needless to say the MDX fit them perfect, Herry could still get his head out the sunroof. So, yes, I did buy a car for the dogs!! Will try to post pics of the "little" darlings later.

What a wonderful thread!!!
Alas, I have no pictures to post (yet) since I do not have any pets aside from immediate family :) The last goldfish died a few days after we moved to a new house :(

Anyway, I was thinking of getting a dog (primarily for my kid, but I am sure I would love it as much as my son will). I was thinking about a Dachshund (sp?) or a Cocker Spaniel as both those breeds get high marks with kids. Actually, I would personally prefer a Dalmation or a Dobermann, but not having a luxury of a back yard, I believe they are too active to sit most of the day in 4 walls.

Any suggestions?
Anybody knows of any offspring coming soon to any of the above-bred b... (female dogs?) Preferably, from a good family, and on the East Coast.

Thanks.

vip9:

I would HIGHLY recommend a greyhound as they are excellent with kids. I don't have kids, just 2 cats, but greyhounds are known for being extremely laidback with other animals and people alike. My greyhound (his picture is above) is the ONLY dog I've ever been around where I am 110% sure he will never bite me or anyone else. He is sooooo passive, it's ridiculous. It didn't take my cats too long to figure out they could boss him around. They can even eat his food with him standing by and he'll patiently wait until they leave the area before he eats.

You don't necessarily have to have a fenced yard, but it definitely helps. You'd just have to make sure to not let him off the leash in an open area outside, or you might not ever see him again since he can run so fast. Also, they can be very lazy too, so staying inside allday and just loungin' comes naturally. People think they're hyper, but that's often not true.

I'm partial to the cause of rescuing retired racing greyhounds, so this is just my 2cents! :D

C'mon, where's your Big Apple initiative. Lots of folks have big dogs in your city. Consider getting a doggie treadmill so your pooch can get his or her exercise. Dalmatians are not a good choice best but dobies are fine but a lab might be your best choice - good with kids, not super big like my great pyr, and they don't shed a lot. I am not a big fan of small dogs but there are some breeds that are okay with kids you just have to be careful.

For your situation a cat, preferably two, would be a better choice than a dog if no one in your family has allergies. I can highly recommend male Abyssinians but stay away from the females in that breed since they are not nearly as affectionate. My two abbys are more like small dogs than cats plus you don't have to walk them and they don't bark!
A2MDXer
I would second the idea of the labs and greyhounds - I grew up with several labs and they are great with kids. I have been around several former racing greyhounds and they all were extremely gentle and well-behaved, plus it's a good cause. Either would be a great choice.
Strong
vip9;
The daschund is a small dog that thinks it is really big - they are not always real good with kids, they actually prefer being and ONLY CHILD. They also need (and demand) a lot of quality time and that is by their definition NOT yours:confused: . Cockers are really pretty good with kids but for most females you better have easily cleanable floors - they are known as the "pee pee dogs" . I have an affection for big dogs, especially Labs or retrievers. They are very good with kids and are great WATCH dogs. I would go to a local shelter with your son and see what they have there and how the dog interacts with him. I am a big advocate of rescuing dogs, it is like they know you saved them. Most large breeds don't really need a big back yard they are happy with a walk around the block or a run at a pet park:p . And you don't have to worry about breaking their little legs if you step on them:( . And the best reason for getting a larger dog is they look cool in the back of the MDX:cool: :) :p ;) .
DMor
I like everything in PAIRS...so might think about a duo so they can be buddies?? I used to have 3 Maltesezzz and they were a blast. Been down to only one for about 10 years and have recently been thinking about getting our Max (13) a buddy, but still undecided. Wonder if he's lonely?? Maybe others can comment.

Anyway, bigger breeds are fine, but you have to keep the steaks off the countertops! :) My personal fav is a standard poodle...uncut. Great dispositions and SMART.

Here's my favorite picture of Kleo. She was a silver tabby Maine Coon. She had diabetes for 7 years, and finally lost her fight with cancer last year. She was the best of all cats, happy and cuddly and infinitely patient (she got me my job by letting me practice interviewing with her).

This photo was from the day she was diagnosed with malignant lung cancer and was given 4 weeks. It shows her eating butter. We spoiled her to the point of insanity for her last days - roast beef, cheese, milk, rib eye (rare), whatever she wanted. She certainly left us as happy as she could be.
JFK
So sorry to hear of your loss. I think you did a wonderful job of making her last days as pleasant as could be. I have three of our cats buried in our back yard (live on the rim of a canyon) so I know what it is like. We also had a Maine coon, now resides in a urn in the bedroom. Life is sweet when they are here, bitter sweet when they are not! Thanks for pampering Kleo.
mikedan
Its always nice to hear others that care as much about their furry little companions... especially those who know the Maine Coon. They're such intelligent cats, and they're so big they can take on others easily. :)

Kleo is in an urn here too, over the fireplace where she can stay warm.

Have you taken the test at AOL Dog Match? It's an interesting process. You answer questions and they give you back breeds they think are right for you. Don't go by the results only, but it's not a bad place to start. I wouldn't recommend a Cocker.

My dog is a first for this thread. I don't have the ability to post a pic, but he's a beauceron, a French herding dog. The best dog I've had, and I've had lots of breeds. A yard is a must. You can see the breed at www.beaucerons.com

Sorry to hear about your puppy but what we have found helps is having other pets around. We put down our favorite cat, Max, in September but had to others plus Bully. Now we have Ginger, our new puppie, so there is comfort in numbers.:) Plus having a new puppie will take your mind off of most other distractions!:D

I agree. I have 4, it doesn't make it any easier to lose one but it helps to keep you busy. I try to get a puppy when the oldest is nearing the end. That way they train each other.:p And I am busy with house training, etc. Never think of it as "replacing" the lost pet. Not even cloning can do that!

Linda...so sorry to hear about Diamond :( I've lost a few over the years. Most succumbed to long-term illness/old age, but one went suddenly in a freak accident in '84 at only 3 y.o. and she was my all time MOST FAVORITE too. It's tough, but TIME will help.
