I know there was another thread in the past on this topic, but I wasn't able to find. I have a 2002 MDX and I'm hitting the 96,000 mile point. I just had replaced my upper and lower radiator hoses, thermostate, Drive Belts, Water pump, Timing Belt, Tensioner, Spark Plugs, and also a Radiator Flush and New Radiator fluid. The Baby ran excellent before all the work and like brand new after the work. I also had to cut my front rotors because had a bad high speed vibration. Just curious to see how high mileage some of us have got on our MDX's? Also any opinion on when to sell? Or when anyone feels the engine will crap out? I'm starting to get nervious, especially with my extended warranty ending shortly? Any idea's on how to get warranty coverage after 100,000 miles? When I called Acura Care they stated there was no plans after 100k? Any idea's or opinions appreciated. Take it easy.

2001 Turned 125000 last week. Runs great. I've documented most of my problems on here somewhere. Relatively minor, in the grand scheme of things. I need to do the hoses replacement eventually. I've done most of the regular maintenance.
I figure at this point resale is worth relatively little so I'm driving it another 100K, until my kid is 16 (he turns 12 in Nov), until it gets totaled, or until it dies totally, whichever comes first. Its in great shape and is still pretty comfortable to drive.
I sold my last Acura (a 1989 Integra LS until it had 225K and then sold it for $1500). |

We just bought a Honda Passport 4 x 4 (196,000 miles on it) for my 17 year old to clunk around in...
It is in *Pristine* condition. |

Thanks for the reply's guys, it's starting to give me some hope at this point in time. I was considering to sell, but can't get close to what I feel it's worth. I probably will run to the ground unless some crazy expensive repaire should arise? Wonder if these engines can go to 300,000 miles or am I dreaming? Take it easy.

| We've had ours for nearly a month, and have put about 1200 on it. Of course, that included a few lengthy trips. |

I'm only at 2,000 miles, so...
If mine wre to break down now, that would not be good. |

200 to 300K on a Honda engine does not seem to be a problem. Other than the notorious transmission problems (many posts on this) I see no reason why a well maintained MDX can not go 200K ++. The MDX will probably depreciate down to some base value that will level out despite the mileage, if it is well maintained.
The downfall of an older vehicle IMO is when you don't fix all the little things that break (ie a malfunctioning door lock, window that does not go down etc) and you have a vehicle with 5-10 minor annoyances OR you don't fix something major due to the cost (blower etc).
My 95 Accord was sold with 145K miles and ran as good as the day I bought it. The only problem was rear wheel wheel rust. I certainly am hoping the MDX does not develop the rust problem my Accord did.
Personally I like driving an experienced vehicle that runs well - I don't worry about the scratches and dings as much, no payments and if the mood strikes you can move on a new vehicle.
My 02 has 64K and as long as I can avoid the temptation of the new 07 I will drive this for 150K+ with the plan of supplementing some of the mileage with a two seater :) |

| My wife and I just came back from our road trip to Chicago. Our '03 MDX rolled over the 70K mark on the way back. Still runs like a champ - haven't done anything special other than regular maintenance. Peace. |

Thanks for all your opinions and information. I've had my transmission replace with an Acura Re-built unit at about 25K miles and then even had the oil-jet kit installed. I had the passenger window motor replaced, driver seat motor replaced, and the entire track system and motor on the sunroof replaced under the 7/100,000 mile Acura Care warranty. It was well worth the $1,650 that I had spent on it with the $0 deductable. I had to replace my tires at 65,000 miles with the Michelin OEM tires and will be due again at the 120,000 mile point. I noticed that the tires are wearing better now that Costco rotates every 7,500 miles and speed balances for free. On the 1st set of tires, I was rotating at the 15,000 miles. I guess the more your rotate the more even the tires wear and maybe I'll get a longer life. All my maintence is always up-to-date and if anything I over-maintain, considering I own the vehicle. Thanks again for all the information you guys posted. I wish I could go back to the old days of 20K-30K miles. Once you more to Suffolk County in New York everything is so spread out the miles just go so fast! Take it easy.

If 100,000 isn't a typo -are they the original tires you'll be replacing? |

Hit the 70000km ( ~ 43500 miles) the other day on the 02.
I haven't driven the X too much after we got the TL ;)
It has been running like a champ with only regular maintenance needed, which I have done most of them myself. Other than the high insurance cost, the cost of ownership has been pretty
reasonable, considering that it's a semi-lux car. The resale value is not as good as what I would hope for, but I plan to keep it for many more years so it's ok for me.
Hope the transmission will hold up though.. |

105,000 on my '01 MDX and going strong!
But I just bought a boat to tow (ice fishing ended...), and am thinking about the additional wear and tear on the engine. Plus the boat means I won't be upgrading the X this year - hopefully it will hang in there.
Speaking of 100K - my maintenance light is doing the slow blink - has anyone done the 100K timing belt replacement? What will this cost me? I was thinking of seeing if our local Honda dealer would do it, since there's no warranty to speak of anymore... |

Just over 48K on the '02. Original warranty expires next Thursday.
Last warranty claim action to happen, Monday, May 1st, with the replacement of the driver's power seat assembly.
Most major problem to date. The few others were usually under known tech bulletins. Only other one that was not was the SRS failure light due to bad seat belt sensor. |

Just the timing belt and associated stuff cost me around $600, but add in all the other work I had done that day and the bill came to more than $1500.
Here are the parts/labor lines associated with the timing belt from my invoice that day:
Labor - REPLACE TIMING BELT, WATER PUMP, ALL DRIVE BELTS, INSPECT ENGINE SEALS & TENSIONER BEARING. CHANGE COOLANT, CHECK TIMING & ROAD TEST. Replaced as needed. 514.97
Parts 1 14400-P8A-A02 TIMING BELT 48.86
Parts 1 19200-P8A-A03 WATER PUMP 134.87
Parts 1 38920-P8F-A02 AIR CONDITIONING/ALT. BELT 35.35
Parts 1 56992-P8A-A01 POWER STEERING BELT 17.18
Parts 1 COOLANT COOLANT, RECYCLED 11.95
If you can afford it, its not a bad time to do a bunch of maintenance things. |

Thanks Sinecure - probably not a bad idea to do a full belt replacement while it's there.
Did you need the new water pump, or was that preventative?

Preventive. As with most maintenance things, it seems like cheap insurance. |

| 102K miles and dreading the 105K tuneup. If I replace the VTM and ATF fluids and spark plugs myself, the local dealer is quoting me just under $1K for the other stuff (timing belt, water pump, etc.). I guess that's not so bad. May not need KY gel for this one...:D |

Every consider an independent Honda/Acura mechanic?
Should be the same routine as a Pilot, for the most part. Even a Honda dealer might be cheaper, but the waiting room has cloth upholstered seats not leather, and home brew instead of Starbucks, donuts instead of croissants.. :) |

Problem is, the Honda and Acura dealers are owned by the same family and are next door to each other! I probably wouldn't let an independent do the 105K service anyway - who knows how many Acura MDXs they've done that have reached this mileage. Besides, not too many import-experienced mechanics in my neck of the woods. 'Round these parts, anything other than a Ford or Chevy truck is considered an import. :2: |

I'm in the opposite position - the Acura dealer is a 300 mi round trip (so add $60 for gas), and the Honda dealer is 2 mi away - you bet I'll check them out. They've changed VTM fluid for me - the timing belt should be a cinch right?
And I can walk to a nearby Starbucks for latte & wireless... :)

Timing belts and fluid are two very different tasks. However, I would not think a Honda dealer should have a problem.
