Long time no post......busy with the baby boy. ;)

I need some help/advice. I got stopped and ticketed for illegal side window and side wing tint in NY by a state trooper yesterday.

He didn't use any tint meter and just said it was based on "visual observation".

I have the manufacturer tint on all windows except the front driver and passenger windows that I got 30% (legal limit in NY). Is there anywhere I can print out or get info on the stock honda/acura tint that comes with the MDX?

This sucks......what an inconvenience and totally BS.

Bring it to court. There are probably 1000s, if not 10000s of other MDXs in NY. I say the trooper was having a bad day. Also, he doesn't have super vision...

I don't think your local dealership would be able to sell cars over the legal limit for tint. If that is the case make them pick up the tab. I think factory FRONT windo tints are like 97-98%, though I could be wrong. Either way, I doub't he could have been able to tell the difference, and certainly not from the cruiser.

Any idea what the tinting levels are for "06 MDX as fas as side and rear...or are they different for different colors? I have had mine (Steel Blue) for 4 days and one thing I have noticed is that it's clearly lighter than my previous vehicle ('98 Explorer) and yesterday on a very sunny day I could see spots in the rear and moon roof. Is that normal for the Honda windows and the tinting they use?

Go back to the tint shop and have them determine the percent tint of all the windows and have them document the info. Then you are presenting fact versus visual observation when fighting the ticket. If they are factory tinted more than the legal limit, then raise the issue.

Do you have the Quartz leather interior? My current vehicle has a very light interior (beige color leather) and with 30% tint. It seems like I barely tinted the windows. My buddy got the same vehicle & tint but because he has a black leather interior... you can hardly see anything inside the car thru the tint even with the sun beaming on it. Sunlight is reflected off of light interiors and absorbed into dark interiors.

Honda factory tint is 5% on all vehicles as per dealer available specs.(except privacy glass in the rear).

You know, your post makes me wonder.....

My wife and I have our first baby on the way, and we plan on using one of those mesh sun visors to block out the sun.

Could we get pulled over for that by some police officer on his way to the donut shop?

Yes it is quartz, and come to think of it some of the other colors we looked at seemed like they had darker windows but I guess it could have been the interior color...5%? Wow, looks like I'll be looking to tint my vehicle next.

I believe the factory tint is 18%-20% on rears and back.

I would suggest that you ask your dealer this question.

Probably not. Go to a tint shop and have them measure so that you will have documentation of your ACTUAL tint levels to present.

i don't see how any factory information would be of use to you in court, since you could not prove that you have not altered factory tint. i would go to the highway patrol and ask them to check the tint with their gun. that information would tell you whether you are legal or not. if you are legal, go to court and nail the cop. if you are not, go to your dealer and raise cane that they would sell you a car that was not street legal.

Not his job to prove that any more than it would be to prove he didn't commit several bank robberies in the state of California with said vehicle.

That's also where I have a problem with the ticket. Because the cop never used a meter, it's now up to the defendant to prove he did not have an equipment violation. Now if he used the windows for probable cause to stop the vehicle and then found something else, maybe the line is more blurred. But I don't understand this situation. It seems like they're betting you won't go to court.

Was the sun out when the cop "eyeballed" this ? I've never had a problem seeing into the back during the day. It's slightly harder at night.

Was there a discussion once that the factory darkened glass is in fact NOT tinted but just colored glass ? Would that be a material difference ? Never having any tint work done, I don't know that much about it.

I would call up a law-enforcement agency, maybe even the one that ticketed you and go wherever they have the meter without necessarily mentioning the ticket. Hopefully they can give you some sort of certified number. If not, at least you know what it is. My father in law recently did that with his pickup that's registered at his winter home. They told him to be sure to keep that registration since the percentage is legal there.

This link though not official might shed some light on local laws.
