Ok everyone thanks for the help on previous posts. Looks like I might go with the rooftop box based on price. I have an '05 MDX. Can anyone recommend a rooftop box thats the largest I can go with that will mount on the factory laggage rails? Thanks a lot, Chuck

Chuck, it can be challenging to mount a box on an MDX. I have a Thule Adventurer box that I think is being closed out or extinct by now. You may want to look at Thule's website to see their current line of boxes. The MDX rails are a poor design since they are too wide and don't move front to back. I had to drill new holes in the bottom of the Thule box to get the box clamps to line-up with the roof rails. I also had to cut the brackets inside the box in half to make them work. When you position the box on the roof, you will squash the antenna down a little but that's OK. Make sure you can open the tailgate with the box on, and that it clears the rear window washer. (When I first placed the box on, the rear window washer nozzle got lodged under the box) The other option is to not use the factory rails and get a foot kit and Thule load bars and mount the box on top of the Thule bars. I've seen other MDX owners use that method because it is easier than modifying the box to fit the factory rails. To add to the fun, I modified our box to fit our 2001 MDX only to find that Acura moved the position of the rails on our 2004 MDX so I had to do it all over again.

I do not know why Acura insists on having fixed rails. Is there any other make out there that also does this. Sure does take away from the utility of having the rails.
