Hey guys, I recently purchased a 2002 MDX. Id look to know what are the best products that I can use that'll give me that shinning look. I've never really done any waxing or buffing before...so whats the best way?
Thanks |

| Welcome to the forum and I'm sure you're going to enjoy your new ride. There are tons of posts on waxing the MDX just do a quick search on "wax" and you'll find them. Many here on this forum use Zaino and from what I hear it's the best stuff. I use meguiar's tech wax. I wash the car, inspect for scratches and if I find some I use scratch x. Then I polish the whole car with meguiar's polish and then finish up with the tech wax. The reason I went this route instead of Zaino was 2 fold. First, the stuff is easier to get my hands on - at any local auto store. Secondly, from what I hear it's easier to apply...the tech wax goes on easy and comes off just as easy. I am very happy with the results of this stuff but again if you want the best - you want Zaino. Good luck and enjoy your ride! |

There's no one "best" product for you without knowing what's important (although you did indicate an interest in shine). For example, a few of the things you might want from your wax/sealant:
Highly reflective shine
Ease of application
Deep, dark, rich shine
Ability to hide fine swirls
Durability
Cleaning ability
There is no one product on the market that excels in every one of those categories. So you have to decide what's important to you and then choose the product which is the best compromise. For instance, Zaino scores very high on durability and highly reflective shine, but a big fat zero on hiding swirls (even Z5) and cleaning ability. Klasse AIO does ok in every category, but excels at none. Pinnacle Souveran has an unmatched deep, rich shine and good swirl hiding, but its durability sucks. Blackfire(2006) looks better than Zaino on dark colors, and goes on and off easier, but doesn't last as long. I wouldn't have eight different sealants on my shelf if there were one that was the best at everything. This weekend my Jeep got Zaino and my Prius got Four Star, and the Blackfired MDX sat in the garage all weekend.
Finally, if you're starting with anything other than a perfect finish, preparation is really the key, and much more important to final appearance than what product you decide to apply last. |

Thanks guys! Well the most important thing to me is getting a nice shine, as well as hiding the minor scratches. If there are products that do better with some colours than others, what would be a good product to use for black? Zaino seems like a good product, but im not sure if I can pick that up at any auto store. I was thinking about getting something for Canadian Tire or something :p. Also whats the difference between waxing and buffing? And which one if better?
Theres so many different products in both polishes and waxes...which do I choose???

ZAINO is only sold on-line. Originally sold by "word of mouth" from classic car shows.....You will NOT find it at Walmart etc.......hahaha
Applying Zaino is easy, buffing it is where the majic appears.......The first run may be a bit frustrating, but the more applications, the better and with EASE!
ZAINO RULES !

Actually, Zaino is available thru local independent distributors. I bought my inital supply online, but then called Sal @Zaino & he gave me the phone number of a local dealer. Price was the same - but saved shipping & also got the product as soon as I paid for it!
FWIW - my X is now 4.5 yrs old (bought it new in Oct 2001) & the Zaino shine looks as good today as it did then! :4: |

ZAINO RULES no matter where you obtain it ! I guess Sal is selling it else where!

| Where in Canada are you located? If you are in Vancouver, I know a place that sells Zaino locally, no shipping what so ever. |

Buffing is the process of polishing the wax.

Im not located in Vancouver, but in Toronto. I don't have a credit card or anything right now, and never bought anything online. Im only 15, and the X is a family car. Just wanna keep it spiffy tho :).
Ive also heard, like the first post, that meguiar's tech wax is also good. Anyone try this before?

I see. I tried NXT before and it was good for a cleaner wax. After you applied it to the whole car your garage will smell fabulous :). If you don't mind the work, you can wash, clay bar, polish and wax the car. I recommand Menzerna for polishes and Klasse for sealent (maybe because these are the only ones I've ever used). For clay, it doesn't really matter IMO, just get whatever you see on the shelves. |

| Thanks alot. Ive heard alot of good feedback about this, but I wont know how it is till I try it. Also ive heard that using a buffer its easy to see paint burns if your no good like me. For a first timer would you suggest doing it without one? |
|

Depends on the buffer you use. I have an orbital machine which does not allow that! If you push gently is would stop the spinning thus not damaging your clear coat. I bought the PC 7XXX model. I was scared at first but it came out flawless....

If you've got a rotary buffer, put it away before you do something stupid and burn your paint. If you've got an orbital, then don't worry, it's pretty much impossible to do any damage with one (also one of the reasons why they're uselessl for leveling and other heavy cutting).
Meguiar's NXT Tech Wax has a lot of fillers, which is probably good in your case since it sounds like you're going to have a lot of swirls that need hiding. |

| Yeah thats true. But I havnt got a buffer either yet, was just checkin on whats the better choice. But I think I might stay away from the buffer for now. Is there anything else I need to know before starting anything? |

From QRTLOW....
Thank You! This whole thread is getting too glitzy with brand X and brand Y. I've used Meguires in the 80's when it wasn't on the CSK shelf. I used 3M Finessitt II on a Black '90 454 SS back in 93 with a Orbital buffer, and it took me 3 weeks to hand polish out the swirls. DROP THE ORBITAL AND STEP AWAY FROM THE EQUIPMENT!
The new and beautiful paint job you have requires little work to maintain the shine. Drop a few bucks on the German glaze called KLASSE. You will only have to spend an hour or so every 6 months. Learn from my mistakes! |
