Update ... I took our brand new 06 mdx into the dealer yesterday for the clunking sounds i would hear when turning the wheel (from a stopped position) from left to right and back.
The service dept. called, stating they would need to order a brand new steering rack, as the sound is coming from within the current one. I just purchased the car on May 1st and I started hearing the sounds with only 800 miles on the odometer. Wow ... so much for getting rid of my 02 VW Passat, due to worrying about reliability issues down the road!
At least I've got a free loaner car while our MDX is in the shop (a TSX with about 110 miles on it, Navi and XM)! I had struggled in the past, with VW, to get a loaner car when I had warranty work done. |

It may not be related to turning the wheels. It may be the click or clunk of the brake calipers re-seating when you change directions.
Or, it could be the neighbors dog that you keep running over. That makes an awful clunk. |

DIAGNOSIS
1. Park the vehicle on an asphalt-paved surface
(some shop floors do not provide enough friction).
2. Start the engine. Open the hood.
3. Have an assistant turn the steering wheel quickly
from the left to the right while you inspect the
steering gearbox pinion area. Look for the gearbox
moving from side-to-side on the subframe, causing
it to knock or pop.
4. Raise the vehicle on a lift.
5. Inspect the two bolts holding the steering gearbox
to the subframe in the pinion shaft area on the
driver’s side.
• If the bolts are loose, go to REPAIR
PROCEDURE.
• If the bolts are tight, continue with normal
troubleshooting procedures.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
Replace the two steering gearbox mounting bolts in the
pinion shaft area. Torque the new bolts to 58 N.m
(43 lb-ft).
