Going in for my 60k service. Anything special I should do?
I'll be doing some of the service items myself to bring down the cost. i.e. replace air intake filter, pollen filter, replace oil and oil filter.
Will skip the tire rotation and inflation check as I just had new tires mounted and I also plan to skip a few other things I could do myself read on the list.
Main things are the brake check, transmission fluid change and diff fluid change.

| You can do the ATF change yourself and save even more dough. It's on the same difficulty level as changing the oil. |

Yes, I could probably change the ATF myself but wanted to have the dealer do it, knowing about the transimission problems. If there is a problem, I want everything documented and tranmission work done by 'qualified' technicians.
I appear to have early signs of a bad transmission -An occasional shudder between 30-40 mph. Hard to reproduce and dosen't happen very often.
I asked the dealer to inspect the ATF carefully and check for burning and particles. |

| The differential fluid change is the same difficulty level as the VTM-4 fluid change. That should save some money also. |

I think your reasoning behind having the dealer change the transmission fluid is pretty solid. The other items on the 60K mi service check are another matter.
The diff and VTM fluid change involve removing two plugs each (upper and lower). It's actually easier than pulling the engine oil. Do a search for DIY instructions. Just make sure you can remove the upper (fill) bolt, BEFORE you remove the lower (drain) bolt. Hate to find out the fill bolt is stuck, after you've already drained the fluid!
If you do those, all that's left on your list for the dealer, is the auto trans fluid change. I'll bet if you tell the dealer all you need is the auto transmission fluid changed (not flushed!) it will be an order of magnitude cheaper than telling him you want the 60,000 mi service, less all the things you've already done. I wouldn't be surprised if you could do the whole check for less than $100 bucks, including filters and fluids for your part of the check.
BTW-
The dealer will charge you $50 just for the cabin air filter. See Tim for a much better price. Also tell him you need the crush washers for the diff and VTM. I think he might even have a kit that includes the pump to replace the VTM fluid. The diff fluid can be replaced without a pump. Give him a call. |
