Got this from another site and thought I'd pass it on. Nothing really new here. Just confirms what some have experienced and what makes doing your own maintenance more attractive

Surprised to see that it's Jiffy Lube doing this. Their techs are just paid hourly...not flat rate, which is something that might make a person more inclined to just "skip" the work so they could move on to another job. Perhaps there was some kind of spiff or comission invovled to motivate them to sell work they had no intention of physically doing.
The part that sucks is that there probably won't be much in the way of punishment for them. The government only really brings down the fire and brimstone on a shop if they cheat with smog checks. |

State Accuses Auto Repair Chain EZ Lube of Deceptive Practices
From the Associated Press
September 22, 2006
State authorities have accused a chain of Southern California auto repair shops of deceptive business practices that included charging customers for parts and services that were unneeded and sometimes never provided.
The Department of Consumer Affairs said Wednesday that it was taking disciplinary action against EZ Lube for allegedly violating the state Automotive Repair Act. The 76 shops in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties could have their business registrations suspended or revoked, officials said.
The state agency outlined 640 allegations against EZ Lube, including making false or misleading statements and not sticking to accepted trade standards.
The legal action came after a two-year undercover probe of the shops.
Skip Miller, an attorney for the privately owned EZ Lube, said the allegations were "completely wrong" and criticized the state probe.
Miller said investigators didn't reveal to EZ Lube employees that they had recently changed the oil in the cars they brought to the stores, which would have prompted the employees to tell them they did not need oil changes.
"We don't go according to the color of the fluid or how it looks; we go according to the mileage," Miller said.
EZ Lube can dispute the charges during an administrative hearing, state officials said. |

Scary.
I went to Jiffy Lube at 30K miles about 6 months ago and they recommended the rear differential fluid change according to the maintenance schedule. I had to remind them to use VTM-4 (thankfully I did as they didn't realize that my Acura was a Honda and might have put some generic stuff in there). Now Im questioning whether the service was even done. Might just do it myself for peace of mind. |
