| I did my oil this weekend on my '05 and replaced the stock Honda oil filter (from the 15,000 service) with a WIX. This was my first oil change since buying the MDX used in December. I was amazed at how tiny the oil filter was. So, I got to thinking: the stock oil filter on my wife's Taurus SHO is also quite small, but the Fram HP1 filter, which is much larger and has better flow than the stock filter, fits perfectly (and all the SHO guys tend to use them). Is there an alternative larger, better flowing filter replacement for the stock MDX filter? Or, are we stuck with this tiny one? :( |

| Thanks. I did a search but came up empty. Guess my keywords didn't hit anything. I'll check out the Mobil filter. |

Purolator L24458 is another one. Too bad they discontinued it.
Haven't searched for any cross references for that one yet.
A Motorcraft FL799(?) is an equivalent. |

I noticed that the http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml link lists the Honda S30281 filter. Is there a difference in the filters through out the MDX life cycle? I know that the WIX filter number has changed. The url lists the WIX 51334, but I used the 51356. Will the Mobile 1 (M1-105) filter fit a later model MDX? Is there an issue with the the internal spring tension or any other components that would cause issues?
Thanks,

| Honda changed its "regular" sized filter to a smaller filter sometime in '03. Other than cost cutting I don't believe there is any real reason why anyone would do that(?) |

"Will the Mobile 1 (M1-105) filter fit a later model MDX?"
FWIW, I use the M1-105 on my '04 X.

Here are some cross referenced part #'s for the 'larger' sized filters spec'd out for '01-02 Mdx's:
OEM: 15400 P0H 305 (good luck finding these)
Bosch: 3312
Walmart: ST3593 (SuperTech label)
Personally, I like the filters made by Champion Labs (Mobil1, Bosch, STP, SuperTech) |

socalJD:
What filter reference numbers do you use in your '05? I guess the operative question is whether the gasket size, flow and bypass valve/spring assembly is the same as the OEM recommended filters in these over-sized filters. On another note, what specificially do you like about the filters from Champion labs? I ask only due to the fact that http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml does not recommend them: "What Not To Use: Bosch, STP, and Wal-Mart Supertech" although it fails to mention the Mobil 1 filter...
Thanks,

Cbrose (Bill),
I am not familiar with NTPOG, so I can't comment on whether they are a well respected, well intended bunch. However, the study seems to be over 5 yrs old - the only date stamp I could find was at the bottom of the webpage (9/1/01 ?). Also, they tested the wrong SuperTech filter, is should be ST3593 not ST2808 (note the '3593' mirrors the Fram filter #s). There was another test done by Honda owners a year or 2 ago, the link escapes me right now. They cut open all the filters available at the time. The conclusion was that the current OEM Honda filter was made by Fram, and was not the best choice available. The Supertech (Walmart), Bosch, STP & Mobil1 filters were made by Champion labs and were much better in quality, with the Mobil1 being better than the others due to better media material. The Supertech filters are very inexpensive (apprx $2) compared to the others ($5-15). I've used both the Supertech & Bosch filters on a '02 & '05 Mdx, so I can tell you there are no issues with leaking or sealing. I do use short intervals (apprx 4-5k) and Castrol dino oil. At first, I was very hesitant in using a Walmart private label oil filter, but it is made in the USA by Champion Labs (the same mfr of Mobil1) and 'product of USA' is clearly printed on the box and on the filter itself. You need to draw your own conclusions, but I know from experience that the NTPOG claims are not true. |

The only two things I'd like to add are -
There are two filters from honda - with part#s ending in '...A1' and '..A2'. One is made by Fram and the other by Filtech (or honeywell? or toyo roki ?). The 'other' one is better, or so I have heard people in the business (or interest) say.
And, a manufacturer (like champion labs) might build filters for many customers (like mobil, fram, etc..). Each customer has its own specs - that's the key. So Champion Labs will make a good filter at a higher price point if Mobil wants it to, or it'd be as happy to make a crappy filter for fram at a lower price point, if thats what they want! |

Couple of comments on your post:
- Fram is Honeywell. In the past, Fram was a brand name of Allied Signal, a OEM auto parts supplier. Then AS merged with Honeywell, thus Fram is now Honeywell. Toyo Rokki & Tennex are the OEM supplier of Japanese oil filters. You will never see these here in the States unless they came on a car assembled in Japan (like the NSX, S2000 or RSX) I would love to get my hands on a case of filters made by Toyo Rokki. Don't know much about Filtech - not sure if they are a US or Canada mfr . . .
- Don't short change walmart. Like Costco, they operate on lower margins than the national brands. They probably only have a 30% markup on their private labels, since it is all profit to them. The national brands charge 200% markup to cover all their overhead (advertising, marketing, logistics as well as gross profit). From a past occupation, I can tell you the pound cake sold as Walmart PL is the exact same as the one sold by Sara Lee, at less than 1/2 the price . . . |

| OK, that sounds good. You've given me some good information. I'll probably go wth the Mobil 1 filter or look further into the Wal Mart one! Now I'm going to eat some pound cake... |

a service adviser at Honda once told me the smaller oil filter was design for new K series engine with timming chain, to aid in build up oil pressure quicker. however, this small fileter does not fit on CR-V. you can oreder s2000 oil filter from Honda dealer, the part number is 15400-PCX-004 and it is made in Japan. it will fit MDX physically however i do not know performance wise...
