I am considering buy a new MDX base model (Premium) or a 2004-2006 used model, possibly touring. If I buy the Touring model I am stuck with the factory roof rack which I don't want. I will be installing a Yakima rack. This will allow me to carry more stuff and use all of my existing Yakima accessories (Bike racks, ski racks, cargo boxes, kayak racks).

Can I remove the factory rack? I am sure I can install the Yakima rack along with the factory rack but it will look very cluttered.

I removed my factory racks, and just left it 'nude'. Had to order and install the rubber trim strips, which went on in 2 minutes. I now have a much cleaner look. If I ever needed the racks, they can be reinstalled in less than 10 minutes.

The attachment fittings for the racks are fixed to the roof, instead of mounted in an adjustable slot. If you were to upgrade to another brand, I'm sure the replacement racks would have to be MDX specific.

Would you please say how you remove the racks and the footings?

keithken and mdxman21,

First of all, :welcome: to acuramdx.org

This site contains lots of information on a number of topics. All you have to do is use the Search function to find what you need. Given that both of you are new on the site, I will cut you some slack. :)

Here is just one old thread that provides information on removing a roof rack.

If you type "remove roof rack" in the search box at the top, you will find lots of additional previous threads on this topic.

Good luck.
