My dad wants a DVD recorder for Father's Day so I can record all his VHS tapes to DVD. I'm debating whether to buy a combo VCR/DVD recorder unit or a stand alone DVD recorder unit (and he can just plug the VCR into it to record).
Anyone have any experience with these units? |

If your Dad specifically wants to transfer VHS movies to DVD I would definitely get the combo units rather than connecting the VHS player to the DVD recorder. Panasonic makes somes really good DVD recorders. check them out.
Just my opinion |

| I'd go for a DVD recorder with a hard drive. Transfer all the tapes to DVD by plugging the existing VCR into the DVD unit, then be done with VCR tapes altogether. |

What's good about those with HD if you are so inclined you can edit the craptacular scenes or stuff you don't want anyone to see :) then transfer final edit to a DVD. |

Good point. If you inadvertantly recorded 4 minutes of the back of your lenscap before realizing you were still on :D , you'll get see those 4 dark minutes forvever immortalized on your DVD in a straight tape-to-DVD transfer. |

Are you going to do this job or is your father going to do it? If you are doing it why not just use your computer and do your editing there.
If he is doing the job he would probably prefet to just have a straight tape to DVD unit. At least that is what I bought to do the job.

My Dad is going to do the job himself. He's not very tech savy so the easiest thing is for him to get a combo unit. I believe they have a Panasonic unit at Costco, so I'll have to check that out.
I like the hard drive idea... but they are still pretty pricey. Plus it's probably better to use a service like Tivo or Moxi that integrates with your cable or satellite provider. I have Moxi for my HD cable and love it. He just has basic analog cable and would probably never upgrade. |
