Plugs have 60k miles on them.
What does the burn out between the bottom of the insulator and hex nut indicate ? I am talking about the brown burn marks in the first picture. Other sides and other plugs have in fact slightly more burn marks than these.

In the second picture (sorry for the bad shot), the tip is slightly "reddish" in color. The rest of the tip is normal grey. What does this indicate ?

Pulled out the front three plugs and all are same way. Any ideas ?

The stuff that looks like it's burned is what I believe to be the trace amount of dielectric grease that seeped down from the boot.

The reddish brown coloring is normal and is attributed to the additives in fuel these days.

Was there a reason to swap them out at 60K? Shouldn't iridiums (I think they are anyways) should be good 90-100k?

Thanks supertech. I almost wondered if it could be because of the fuel system cleaner I used sometime ago.
I haven't swapped them out yet, but probably will. I just wanted to see what condition they were in.

These are double platinum not iridium.

My old plugs look about the same. Thanks for the info - I was getting worried about the way they looked.

Slightly off-topic: how do you hand-thread dem suckers as per the manual, unless you're an alien with 8-inch long, slender fingers? I used a spark-plug 5/8" inch wrench from AutoZone instead.

I use two 3" extensions and a ratcheting socket wrench.
When putting them back I use just one 3" extension first and hand-thread them in by turning the end of the extension. Then add the other 3" extension, put the socket-wrench on it and tighten then up.

When "hand threading" a plug when installing it try this: If you have an old spark plug wire laying around with the spark plug recepticle still on the end just put your new spark plug into the recepticle. Holding onto the wire turn it as you place the spark plug back in its hole. No chance of cross threading because you're not putting enough pressure on the old spark plug wire and it will just twist if the plug does not go in correctly. Problem with using extensions is you might still cross thread somewhat if you really turn on it. IMPOSSIBLE with the old spark plug wire. It will twist before you can cross the threads. Just an idea for ya to try.

rear center plug looked like this - I wonder if its a cracked insulator or just a result of stray sparking/arcing ? Its not a deep crack though, probably just on the surface. Glad I pulled them all out. Denso Iridiums going in for all bores next week.

A section of old tubing that will fit over the plug acts well as a thread starter too.
