New poster here (sorry for the repost from thr other room)
My wife and I saw a very nice condition 2001 touring MDX with about 55,000 miles on it. It has all the features and is competitively priced based upon the analyis by KBB and Edmunds.
I am VERY concerned about the transmission issue. The owner states that they have had no problems with it and it has run perfectly. They further state that they have maintained it with the local dealership here.
Is there any feeling as to the failure rare on the 2001 trannys? Since it is clearly beyond warranty, is there any likelihood that Acura would do a courtesy replace on the tranny should it fail - especially given that I am a second owner of the vehicle?
Love the look and feel of the car, but am not prepared to pony up an additional $3500 over the sale price owing to defective design. |

Given the volume of posts on '01-02 tranny issues, I don't think you'll have many members tell you not to worry about it.
My recommendation is that if you really love the car, and it's a great deal....find out what an extended warranty would cost you. I personally would not but an '01 or '02 without some type of warranty.
Other than the tranny...it's a wonderful car all the way around. |

I'd ask either that dealer, or Tim at Hondacuraworld (see link above) about buying an extended warrantee and whether it'd cover the tranny. FWIW, I have a 2001 with 130K on it and it runs fine. I replaced my tranny around 65K - although I never had the total failure so often reported around here - I just started getting noises and they replaced it for the cost of labor ($1000) - at the time they hadn't started the recall.
Then again, if you can find a used 2003+ for the same sort of money, that might be a safer option. The 01 is a great car - like I said, mine runs like a top. |

| Pass on it! Now that the tranny issue has finally hit Consumer Reports ratings, resale will probably take a hit for the 2001/2002's if that is a concern. |
