There goes my weekend up in smoke...

The head of one of the lower three 5mm hex bolts that hold the front intake manifold in place is stripped! :3:
The rest all are ok. It was already that way, this is the first time I taking it out.

If you know which one I am talking about you probably know that I really cant hold the head with a plier or something and turn it. There just isnt enough clearance. Now how the f*ck do you get something like that out ?!

Sorry to read this.

Couple suggestions:

1. Drill the bolt head off. Once the bolt head is off you can lift the manifold then take vice grips to grab a hold of the remaining bolt stud and turn it out. I'd have compressed air or a shop vac to get rid of the metal filings to be certain noting falls in the motor.

2. Did you try one of those "screw out" bits? Wonder if they would have enough "bite" to allow you to twist it.

3. Did you attempt this when the motor was warm? If not, did you try applying a little heat to the bolt (run the motor or apply heat externally)? Warm bolts always free better than cold ones.

4. Could you try and get a socket around the outside of the bolt? This is a complete SWAG if this would work.

5. Call a service garage or an Acura service dept. and see if they have any suggestions. Maybe they can offer suggestions or you can you get the car there and have them get the bolt out. (I had to do this when I couldn't get the crank bolt off my Accord to change the timing belt.)

Good luck and let us know what worked for you.

Thanks Greg. Appreciate your comments.
Here's some pic just for the heck of it.
There is some clerance to get a socket in, but will have to see what is available for this kind of a job.
(sorry for the giant size, will help you get a zoom view of the problem area)

Take that whole plenum assembly off. You've already got the upper cover to get at the bolts still removed right? Once it's off, get it upside down on a bench so you can get at that thing better. Then saturate that bolt with a good penetrating oil like PB Blaster. Let it sit for a good hour or so. Now, you've got some options...

You could try a needle nose Vise Grip plier to try and turn it.

You could grind a slot in the head and try to use a flat blade screwdriver or hand impact driver to turn it.

You could maybe get a bolt extracter socket on there, but it looks like the walls of it will be too thick to clear the plenum chamber.

What I'd do would be to use a hammer with a chisel or punch along the side of the bolt head to turn it. Myabe make a notch first with the chisel, then using the flat punch at as flat an angle as you can in the notch you just made to try and get the bolt to turn then. Once it breaks loose, a regular old needle noze shold spin it the rest of the way out. I do this all the time on bolts for the ignition switch. The bolts for that are special types that have heads that actually break off when tightened, so you have no choice but you use a hammer and punch to remove them.

Have you tried drilling the bolt and using an easy out?

let me see if I can get that Dremel Flex to cut two slots on the head of the bolt. It will be tough getting under there though.

In hindsight it does look like taking the plenum assembly off would have been the better option. Who knows whats the condition of the lower bolts on the other side cover(the uppers are fine).
When I started off I was debating whether I should take the plenum off or just the side covers only. I wanted to take it one easy (yeah right) step at a time so thought I'd just remove the covers first.

just wondering why you are doing this . was something broke or what?

Based on how that looks, I might hunt for the next size up hex socket and pound it into the bolt. Since some the metal on the head is already torn up, no loss there.

The grinding option to get a screw driver in is also a good option.

That would be the easiest (pun intended, however bad) way, worth giving a shot before you try slotting the head and end up chewing up the area around it.

honestly I am little shaky about drilling through the bolt.
a friend offered to help using his vice grip pliers - I have never used one. So will try that first and in the meantime see if a bolt extractor socket is an option or not.

am getting all sorts of crazy ideas now..:bonk: ..could even try epoxying a hex bit into the bolt, let is sit overnight, and then turn it. worst case I will loose the bit...somebody stop me..:p
