Temp sensor malfunctions after body work - Click HERE for Original Thread

My X was hit by a deer on the left front fender and driver door. Body shop replaced fender and fixed the door. Now, the outside temperature display shows a widely fluctuated range of numbers, one minute 86, next 80.

Question: is it possible that body shop people messed it up? Where is the sensor located? anywhere close to the damage area?

Body shop naturally denied that they had anything to do with it. How do I convince them otherwise?

Thanks advance for your input...

The temperature sensor is located on the back of the front bumper beam.

Here is what I would do:

Since you are still under warranty, bring the car to your MDX dealer and have them replace the sensor.

Just to get more info, how often does the sensor sample the temp? It appears that the sensor shows temp relative to chassis temp, i.e. higher at idle and lower at highway speed.

If I bring to dealer to complain, it wouldn't take them 10 minutes under the hood to figure out this vehicle had had body repair, thereby starting a new cycle of finger pointing.

Thanks for your thoughts...

Dunno how often the sensor samples the temp, but subjectively, it takes a good 5 to 10 minutes for mine to change. I agree with your observations about the changes with vehicle speed.

About the finger-pointing, if it can be proven beyond reasonable doubt that the sensor was damaged as a result of the body repair (which Acura didn't necessarily have to undertake), then the body shop should step up and stand behind their work, especially if your insurance paid for it.

Could the sensor have been damaged in your collision with the deer? If so, I think your insurance would have to make a re-adjustment. Then again, if it is located on the right side there goes that theory.

I believe it is constant. To test the sensor you are told to put it in ice old water and check the resistance with an ohm meter. Then take it out of the water and measure the resistance again. If it's different it's working. There is a chart in the service manual that shows resistance relative to temperature.

I'd go to Acura first if in fact it is faulty. The worst they can do is say no. Then if they say no you must talk to your insurance company. I can't imagine this being an expensive item. Labor shouldn't be bad either as it just pops out and then you pop a new one in.

Good luck.

Of course the sensor is constant! the car/display/computer samples it with some discrete frequency.

Here is what you do:

Contact the body shop. Send them a fax, actually. Tell them:

1. THe termperature sensor is behiind the bumper and the wiring is near where they did work

2, They can try to fix it.

3. If they decline, you will bring it to Acura.

4. If acura determines that it was improperly repaired, you will have acura fix it and ask the insurance company to send the bill to the body shop.

Run this scenario by your inusrance company... they might, in fact, just have a quick chat with the body shop first.

I know it's too late to say this, but for all of you who have damaged cars, have the dealer do repairs. Then this will not be an issue. It's either warranty or accident related. Either way, you will have less running around to do and the dealer will be more likely to help you. I know it costs more to repair there, however the insurance company is paying, so you might as well go to where it will likely get repaired properly. You have that right.
