suspension noise? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm looking for some help isolating a noise coming from the wheel area on the driver's side at the rear.

I would describe the sound as an exterior rattle along the lines of what you would expect if there was a tin can with a couple of large bolts in it somewhere near the wheel well.

This sound is only present on sharp bumps like potholes. You don't hear it over other types of bumps (e.g. speed bumps, unpaved laneways) even where the suspension is fairly active. However, even the most moderate pothole or sharp edge produces a distinctive rattle even at low speeds.

With the window up you can't hear the sound at all and everything feels smooth.

The dealer has now had six chances to diagnose and fix this but they are not having any luck. The first three resulted in them saying there was no noise. When on the third attempt the service rep suggested that I was just imagining things I threatened to contact Acura which resulted in his boss coming for a ride and hearing it immediately. Since then they have throughly inspected the suspension and heat shields etc. Most recently they isolated a rattle that I discovered coming from the fuel tank mounts but nothing has stopped "the noise."

They have spent a total of approx 10 hours on this and the tech now "assigned" to me seems entirely determined to solve this but he and I are not sure what's left to check. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Since this noise is only present on abrupt bumps my own theory is that it is something loose that rattles when the suspension is unable to fully absorb the impact rather than the suspension itself actually causing the noise.

I finally got this fixed. My dealer tried on 5 different occassions and finally gave up and said I would have to live with it.

At that point I decided to try a dealer in another city and they fixed it on the first try. It turned out to be the parking brake. The cable was properly adjusted but the assembly itself was rattling. They took it apart put it back together and the noise is gone.
