One of my neighbors has one, and the grill seems larger (better looking) than most Pilot's I've seen. All it has is the chrome steps, and the tint- but, it looks good to me... |

Impressions: I like some features of each (part of this is due to the Pilot being newer and my MDX being older).
Pilot - I like the extra space in the rear (roofline is a bit higher and longer so there is more cargo space. 8 seats vs. 7 is not a biggie in my book but the Pilot does allow more cargo room if you need one person in the 3rd row because you can fold the 60% side. I like that the 2nd row seats slide forward several inches (flexibility in seating) and that the 2rd row folds on both sides for access (not just the pass. side). Center storage is nice and useful but the column shifter is a bit of a pain so that's probably a wash. Personally I like the looks of the front of the Pilot more (more aggressive and squared) than the front of the MDX but overall the appearance of the MDX (especially the 03-06) is slightly better than the Pilot IMO. The 06 Pilot has many refinements that the previous Pilot's did not making it a closer match to the existing MDX. I am not going to list some of the other things on my Pilot vs. my MDX b/c the new MDX models have these features.
MDX - I definitely like the handling/suspension better on the MDX. Pilot ride is softer and quieter but has more sway and not as tight. I like the tighter/firmer feel of the MDX. I also like the seats of the MDX better (at least my 01) as I sit more "in" the MDX seat and more "on" the Pilot seat. It's aesthic but I like the black leather of the MDX and it's not available on the Pilot. You get a longer warranty with the MDX and it's nice as there are less MDX's on the road - Pilot's are more frequent. All in all I like both. The Pilot is a bit better in the utility department but the MDX has a sportier (i.e. better for me) ride. If you don't need the extra utility of the Pilot then I would say I would probably pay the extra to get the MDX. I already had an MDX and I liked some of the extra utility features of the Pilot so it was about even in my book. When I factored in the extra cash involved it was not worth it for me right now so I chose the 06 Pilot. |

I dunno, if I had gone to Honda, instead of Acura, I'd probably have purchased the Pilot w/Navigation, as long as I could get the bodyside molding, and chrome step rails, like I have now...
Maybe I'm getting old, but I wouldn't mind having that Odyssey, w/Leather & Navigation, in black... |

I've owned both and agree with this assessment but would add that for us the "improved" MDX handling really didn't have any benefit. The wife drove both and they are 4500 lb vehicles - handling was never pushed in either. The Pilot actually did better in Consumer Reports emergency handling tests even BEFORE the Pilot added VSA despite the MDXs better handling - that's the most important handling aspect to us. We also live down a long winding country road that was probably last paved 20 years ago. The stiffer MDX suspension transmitted every single bump and crater and got very tiresome. The Pilot absorbs a lot of the road imperfections and is much more comfortable along the same road. |

It's just the standard 2006 redesigned grill. My pic doesn't show it but I have added the chrome side steps to the Pilot (I don't have the new ones on this computer). I added the flares to the Pilot as the stock body was a bit bland for me and the flares made it look more aggressive IMO. I didn't add flares on my MDX. I probably should have gotten the Nav on the Pilot but there was less of a supply with Navi at the time and I wondered how much I would use it. As it was, I got the Pilot for just under $30K and that seems pretty reasonable. I am happy with the decision and no regrets so far. |

When I was deciding between an 02 MDX and a Pilot the deciding factor was the fact that my wife has a 99 CRV. I did not feel there was enough difference in looks to have both a Pilot and a CRV. At one point when I was looking at what I thought was a Pilot (on a Sunday when the dealer was closed) and then determined it to be a CRV the decision was made to go for the MDX. Since then both the CRV and Pilot have changed.
Has anyone done a side by side comparison of both from a loooks perspective? |

There is a thread around here somewhere from a few years ago that has very good pictures of both side-by-side, which I can't find now :( It was a red/burgandy pair owned by extended family members. |
