My family wanted to take our 2006 MDX to the Drive-In tomorrow night. I noticed that the radio does not work without the key in the ignition, and you have to turn the key 1 or 2 notches to make it work. Will the battery die if I leave the radio on for like 4 hours? I just don't want to kill the battery in my new X. Thanks!

It might, 4 hours is a long time. But if you turn the car on, you are wasting gas too. But it's your decision.

Haven't been to a drive-in in years. Do they still have the tinny sounding speakers or is the car radio the only way to get audio?

I remember some drive-ins even had electric heaters so that you did not have to start the motor to keep warm.

I also do not remember having to start the motor to keep warm anyway, there were usually other activities to keep from getting cold. The windows would get all fogged up but it never seemed to matter.

Unless you have a weak battery it should be perfectly OK to use that small amount of electricity.

There is very little battery drain with the key turned on and the radio playing.

Personally I would have no hesitation.

What he said :)

As I recall, letting the radio run for an hour for example takes the same amount of juice as one vehicle start.

I remember years ago the problem that people would run into is on the old points/condenser ignitions......they'd go to the drive in or leave the radio on in the car to listen to it with the key in the run position instead of the ACC position, and the condenser would burn out because it wasn't being discharged with spark.

Of course, since the MDX is newer than 1973, it's a non-issue :)

I hope you're going to the new Disney/Pixar film Cars.

You are almost correct about the points/condenser problem. The real problem was the possibility of the points being in the closed position. In that event they would be drawing a current the entire time and burn out. The condenser does not mind having a constant voltage.

Another problem was that the old time radio was a tube type and drew many, many more amperes that today's radio.

The problem is that when you have as many birthdays as I have had the remembering is the hard part!!!

I done that once and did not have a problem. I think if your battery is fully charged it will be okay. Only the DVD player eats juice otherwise just the radio you will be fine. Make sure your lights are off please.

Thanks guys! If I have to call Acura for a jump..I'll tell you!

Last time I went to a drive in, they had battery jumpers there just in case peoples' cars died.

You could always bring a boom box if you are worried.

I'm curious what movie you're seeing for 4 hours!

I'd recommend letting the NAVI screen go dark if you have it, but I wouldn't worry about the battery.

FEWW!! I'm back and my X did not die. I went to see Superman, and than Click. The movies run side by side. The NAV screen thingy was like a searchlight it was soo bright. I like how you can turn the interior lights off in the MDX, unlike in the stupid bmw X3 toy. thanks!

I'm a little late with this, but I take the kids to the drive-in all the time in the MDX. The sound is great and all the lights can be shut off (it took awhile the first time to figure it out). No battery drain. If you haven't been to a drive-in, find one--they're great!

I think all of you people are missing the point here. Is the X a drive in vehicle. I think not. Take you're beaters people. Also, I have run down the battery on a few occasions with my X, and the reason is the navi screen and the amount of power usd by the stereo system. That said, the radio tells you when the battery needs recharging.

Don't take the X, but your beater?

I don't get it, why wouldnt you take your nice SUV to the drive in? Because of the possibility of draining your battery? I'd rather be sitting in my nice leather seats than in some bucket.

If your battery is adequately charged than you shouldn't have a problem with the battery dying, at least in my experience.

Oh, it's got nothing to do with the battery, rather the mess of your family spilling popcorn, pop etc, unless of course they are different from my family.
