| Deal went sideways, my fault?

After agreeing on price via Internet for a Touring w/Nav ($36.6k), went to the dealership for one last test drive and to finish the deal. Test drive went fine, then we went inside to get it done.
We went over the prices and options again, and they were all fine. I asked him to put the numbers on a purchase order for me to sign and that I would come back in when the accessories were installed (approx. 2 days), pay cash, and pick up the X.
At that point, salesman informs me they would need to run a credit check, and that I needed to fill out a credit application. Even though I was paying cash, they needed "backup financing" in case the check bounced. I told him I would agree to the credit check only if I got a signed purchase order from the sales manager. Why would I agree to a credit check without a signed purchase order? Without a signed purchase order, I've got nothing.
He then did a "print screen" on a form that had the purchase price, taxes, etc., drew a line on the bottom of it, and asked me to sign it. Even though his printout had the right numbers, I informed him it was not a purchase order without a VIN, warranty information, list of accessories, etc., and that I would not sign it.
He went out of the room, came back, and said he could not write up a purchase order without first running the credit application... dealership policy. I repeated my offer to allow the credit check ONLY if we had a deal evidenced by a signed purchase order. He apologized that he could not, so I left.
Perhaps I was too cautious, but it seemed weird that they would not write up a purchase order without first running a credit check. I would appreciate any thoughts, as I do not want this to happen again. |

You tendered a cash offer. They were playing games. WALK!!
You done good. You did not want to deal with this stealer. the next move is theirs! |

| it never ceases to amaze me the hoops dealers will try to get you to jump thru. Why it can't be a simple purchase for a said amount is beyond me. When a dealer attempts to put all these obstacles in front of you that is the time to WALK. Don't get caught up in their chenanagans. Why you can't buy a car like a gallon of milk has always been beyond me but they play these games at their peril. There are too many cars out there and too many dealers that are honest to deal with. You did nothing wrong, and be proud of it. After all, IT'S YOUR MONEY!! |

Don't feel bad, one of the dealers here called to see if I still wanted the vehicle, I said yes, I'll give you a $2500 deposit, she said, "Let me see if I still have the vehicle." She called back and stated they did in fact have the vehicle BUT she couldn't hold it for me even w/ a nice size deposit.
I found another MDX the same distance from me for less $$. cha-ching. :D |

| Never heard of such a thing. . . Use a cashier's check (Or whatever they want to call an official bank check) and tell them to stick it! |

| This sounds VERY fishy to me. Is this a common practice to require a credit check even when its a cash deal? Im glad you ran away. It sounds like a ploy of some sort to make more money off you. The suggestion to just get a certified cashiers bank check is the way to go in the future. |

| Problem easily solved when paying with a cashier's cheque, bank draft or certified cheque. That's the way it's done here. Never had to agree to a credit check when paying cash (never even been asked!). Plus, if they really want to do a credit check, they can call Equifax and get it. Sounds like they were after something else. |

;) If the dealer's is needing to sell a vehicle if they are below a given month's percentage sell. Yes, that's a possibility. Just to maintain a given months sell. They won't make any money from you since that's way below the invoice price. Then, they may actually sell at that price. Timing and negotiation is the key getting that figure. |

You were paying cash?
I would have told them to perform french fellatio on me, then left.
What kind of BS is that? Back-up financing?
No, what the deal is, is they get a kick back for every credit check they process. Atleast Ford sales peopel do, I have two, no three friends that work for various Ford dealerships... |

So true. Timing is what got that deal done. It's the end of the month. Maybe that dealer is hurting for numbers, and one more unit out for the month even if there's little or nothing in the deal is still one more check mark on the wall. |

Might explain why I got my MDX (Last Saturday of the month) with no hassle or haggle, when they originally asked for $820/month and I offered $585, and they said "Deal". The only thing I regret, is not making them ante up the Navigation system, or the rear spoiler.
The guy that sold it to me said it was his first time selling four MDX's in the same day.
Bought: Feb |

That's how you negotiate?!?!? OMG.
Term, money factor, residual, cash down, amount.
Those are the FIVE items a lease requires before you know if you were screwed.
I bought an M5 a last year. Cashiers check. They didn't twitch. Name, address- that's it. Drove it away.
I never deal with salepeople anyway- just talk to the peoplei in finance- they control every deal. |

So, two days later, I get an e-mail from the dealership sales manager, who wants me to contact him to try and get the deal finished. Perhaps the nearly 100 X's they have in inventory is a motivating factor. Amazing...
Anyway, I now have a certified check ready to go, and am working with another dealership. The saga continues... |

| Why the heck do they need to run your credit when you are paying with cash? You did the right thing of walking out. |
