I bought an '03 MDX at auction and need some advice. It seems to have been sitting for a while before the auction. I have had all the little problems fixed at the dealer under warranty and everything seems fine. It is a great car. The mileage just seems to be a little low so I want to tune it up.
I have changed all fluids, t-case, tranny, VTM, and plan on putting in new spark plugs. It only had 31000 miles on it when I bought it. Other than plugs and filters, are there any other tune up parts I should replace, pcv valves, sensors, etc?
Any other suggestions for improved mileage are appreciated. Currently I get around 12mpg in town. |

Bought at auction? How'd you make out? I've always wondered how good a deal an auction sale could be.
Lot's of variation in mileage from various owners, so it may not necessarily be due to any maintenance items, more driving style/conditions etc. 12mpg isn't too bad if it is congested city driving. My average for city only is closer to 17 or 18, but it is not heavy city traffic.
I would suggest trying a good fuel additive (Techron). If it was sitting a long time, could be some muck in the line or injectors which inhibit performance.
Also, if you are not already doing so, run premium to ensure your spark is not being retarded in any way. (you can go back to a lower grade if you determine that this is not an issue for you)
Lastly, some owners have had issues with the EGR valve. Symptoms include loss of power and the feeling that your tranny is slipping. I would not replace this unless you have a specific issue as it is covered under warranty and not a regular maintenance item.
Pretty early for plugs, maintenance book says they are 100k plugs if I remember correctly. I'd leave them.
Welcome to MDX ownership. I have an '03 as well and love it. |

I think I made out ok. I paid $24k for it. I had never bought at auction before. I used a dealer friend that I trusted to buy it for me sight unseen. With Acura's warranty to 50k miles I felt like I could get any problems fixed and get rid of it if it was a bad car. But it has been great. Had 29,000 miles on it when bought, 31,000 by the time I got it, and now has 45,000. Been a great car.
Anyway, where is the EGR valve located and does anyone have details, pictures, intructions on how to replace it if it is bad? |
