I went on vacation for a week and parked my 2001 MDX in Philly airport. Last night when I came back, I started the engine and tried to shift transmission into "R" from "P". But the shift lever was stuck and I could not shift it out. I turned off the engine and repeated the sequence again, same problem. I took out the manual and learned to use a flat-headed screw driver (which I happened to have one in the glovebox) to push into a narrow opening next to the lever and was able to shift to "N" then to "R". However when I parked next to the ticket window to pay my toll, it got stucked again. So I had to do it all over once more. After I reached home last night, the same problem was there again.
Since I was in a hurry this morning I have not had a chance to study my car yet. I did a search on this board but did not find anything useful. Wonder if anyone had similar experience and what was the cause /fix?
For your information, I had a brand new transmission installed after MDX transmission was recalled 2 years ago. |

I assume you are stepping on the brake pedal while attempting to shift out of park...
Only reason I bring it up is I once took a trip and was using a manual transmission. When I got back I forgot about the interlock and the need to step on the brake. |

Yes I stepped on brake pedal while trying to shift out of parking mode. I always press hard on brake pedal when starting engine or shifting transmission out of "P" mode...
I just searched the problem on the internet (not on this site) and someone mentioned that it could be due to a blown out fuse for tail light or horn, so that you won't be able to drive the car when you lose use of horn or tail light, for safety concerns. I have to check that theory tonight after I get home. But that surely sounds strange yet reasonable. |

| If it's not a brake light, it's in the shift lock system, the circuit that closes when you depress the brak pedal. |

| Last night I found out the fuse for stop lights was blown and after I replaced it with a spare one, everything went back to normal. |

Congrats,
Just wondering why your fuse blew though? |

Hey, orig poster: what transmission recall?? My 2001 never had a recalled transmission, just an oil jet cooler fix.

Most likely causes are water intrusion into a connector or wire or some short associated with an aftermarket trailer hitch wire harness. (Most of those usually tap into a brake light wire. |
