Hello MDX Owners,

I am about to join the club. Test drove an '04 X and have pretty much decided to go with it.

Has anybody tried using 87 or 89 octane on their X ? Does it really make the engine knock ? The dealership said 89 was OK but 87 was a NO NO.

I use 87 octane on most fillups. If there is any engine knock it is not audible. The engine computer compensates the spark advance so that the lower octane is used without knock.

You will find one whole forum topic on this subject

Fuel, Octane, Mileage, Etc.

tons of posts on this subject if you search.
however my personal experience and opinion on this is that it does loose power with 87 octance if you drive it hard or tow. does not affect mileage very much though.
depends a lot on your driving style/needs. Try both and see.

I have yet to see any good information on whether it will advance the timing back if you start using 91+ octane. So if you try 91 after 87, reset the ecu (with engine already warm but off, pull negative terminal of battery, reconnect after few seconds, restart and let it idle for a few minutes).

Computer automatically resets timing regardless of when or how often you switch fuels.

Although ideally that's how it should be I am not quite sure if that really happens or not. I have always noticed she gets the spring in her step back only if the ecu is reset going back to premium fuel. Try it and see. (make sure you have the radio code handy).

Plus even if it resets timing how often does it attempt ?

All this is just theory. Would be nice if someone actually saw (using an obd-ii scanner) the timing advance and retard.
