Hi Folks
Which extra charges are typically OK to appear on the purchase contract ? Here is the list of charges I know of:
a. Purchase price
b. destination charge
c. accessories and installation
d. sales tax (on a + b + c)
e. title and registration
Are there other charges ? Which charges should set off internal alarms in my brain ?
Specifically I am looking to purchase in the Bay Area.

NO DESTINATION CHARGE!!!!! It is illegal to even represent oit as a fee to a customer!!!!!!! If they are trying to tell you that it is an additional fee to your selling price, then you are already dealing with a dishonest dealer and you should try elsewhere. It is the OLDEST trick in the book right now...quote a price that is $615 cheaper than everyone else, and then get it back as a fee. If you got a price in writing, it will not have it in it..it will say the price + fees. THEY HAVE TO SELL YOU THE CAR FOR THAT PRICE WITHOUT THE DESTINATION FEE if you still want to pursue doing business with that dealer. Personally, I would never want to....if they are dishonest to sell the car, how in the world are they going to take care of you in the future as well?
California...finally..someone that I know for sure!!!!!!!
Price
Doc Fee-$45.00
Sales tax from the county you live in of the price and doc fee.
Tire Recycling fee-$8.75
Registration
That is it. Nothing more unless you buy accessories. All accessories have to be seperated on the contrat to a different line and separated from the selling price.
If you already know your selling price, I will figure your OTD figure for you to the penny. |

I am tracking the dest. fee in the quotes that I recieve - that is I am making sure of whether it is included in the quote or not.
I just assumed that it is a seperate line item on the purchase contract - but seems I was wrong. That also explains that most of the quotes I received were annotated with "includes dest. fees".
Thanks for the warning, though :)

Isnt the sales tax same for the entire state ? at 8.25% ?

I was quoted $37442/= for in stock Touring/DVD/Nav including dest. charges. What would the OTD figure come to based on that ?

Sales Tax---no...they are different all over the place. Santa Clara-8.25%--ALameda-8.75%--San Francisco-8.50%--Santa Cruz-8.00% with some areas in Santa Cruz being 8.25%. Whatever county you are registering in, is the tax you have to pay. Keeps everyone that lives in the higher tax areas from running to the counties with lower tax rates and depriving that county the sales tax revenue.
Your price, based on 8.25% OTD will be as follows-
37442
45
3117.43 tax
8.75 tire
353 reg
total=41221.18
You can get a better price as long as you are not looking for Aspen White. get a hold of the dealer that has most likely sent you a price that says they will beat anything you have in writing.......from the sounds of that price, I bet that dealer will beat it by about $250-$300.....if that little more is that important to you!!! :D |

Destination charge is required, otherwise that figure is somewhere else. Its how finance rearrange that figure to a total, if its not included. Don't let that number fool you. Someone has to pay the destination charge. Acura bill the dealer for delivery to there lot for sales.
For me, I negotiated the destination charge to be included in the sale price.
Tires for California is now higher as a fee, you can thank Arnold for that.
All county/states have different sales taxes. |

yes...destination is charged TO THE DEALER TO GET THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP....but it is not allowed to be passed on to the customer as a fee. All price quotes, in the state of California, must INCLUDE the destination charge BEFORE any other fees. I think you meant that, and it sounds as though Kuntal is on top of the Dest. Fee as well. :D
Not sure what you mean about the tire fee...it is still only $8.75 and has not been raised at all since it began a couple years ago. $1.75 per tire.....all cars, five tires counting the spare. If someone in Ca told you otherwise, they lied to you and you probably have window etch or something that you did not even know about. :( |

Thanks for these figures - especially the registration fee. Also, nice to learn about the different sales tax per county. The small differences arent as noticeable with smaller purchases I suppose.
I was targetting a price between $37000 and $37250 - but I havent seen anyone on these or Edmunds forums quote a purchase price lower than 37.5K so I was a bit skeptical.
Suprising that Aspen Whites are costlier - more demand I guess ? Strange considerig that I remember seeing on some website that Black X's were the most popular ones sold.

Acura limits us on the number of Aspen Whites we are allowed to order...so most everyone charges a little more for that due to supply and demand. We can order as many Black ones as we want. In our area, Sage is actually the most popular color....sell them more than anything by FAR.
If you really really want to grind and hold firm, you could get it below 37,000....but I willnot lie to you, it will take work and patience on your part to get it there!!!!!
net cost on DVD/Nav is 36621.25...taking into account the incentive AND holdback....how close you get to that depends on how hard you hold your stance and how much each little dollar holds importance to you. |

Ah ! Now I see how come you felt that the quote still has some negotiation possible.
Your net cost comes to 36621.25 while I arrived at the net cost for DVD/Nav to be 36828.25 as follows:
Invoice = 39827 (from several web sites including Edmunds)
Dest. = 615
Incentive = 2500
Holdback = 3% of base MSRP (per edmunds) = 37125 * 0.03 = 1113.75
So net cost = 39827 + 615 - 2500 - 1113.75 = 36828.25
Did I miss something ? How come your net cost comes to 36621.25 ? |

invoice is 40447.25 including destination
2500 incentive
holdback is 3% of MSRP minus destination. you took 3% of 37125 when you need to take 3% of 44200....of whatever msrp is..at home, don't have the numbers, but it comes out to a little over 1300. |

I hope will excuse my being a bit of a stickler here.
The reason I took 3% of 37125 instead of 44200 is because Edmunds (and several other websites) say that Acura holdback is 3% of BASE MSRP and hence I used the 37125 number and not the touring/DVD/Nav MSRP.
Do you feel that these websites dont have the right information about using the BASE MSRP?

Base means MSRP of the specific model not including destination or options:
From Edmunds:
"National Base Price:
The national market price for the base configuration of this vehicle. This figure does not include optional equipment and destination charges."
National Base MSRP price of the MDX/navi/Res is $44200 according to Edmunds.
SDST is in the Biz, so he/she knows.......... |

Question on the holdback. From what I have learned it is 3% of MSRP. Saw this figure quoted as $1250. If this holdback goes away 90 days after car hits the lot, how do I figure out how long the car has been in stock and how much of the holdback I can calculate into my bid? |
